Summary

In this long-awaited and candid memoir, Hitchens re-traces the footsteps of his life to date, from his childhood in Portsmouth, with his adoring, tragic mother and reserved Naval officer father; to his life in Washington DC, the base from which from he would launch fierce attacks on tyranny of all kinds. Along the way, he recalls the girls, boys and booze; the friendships and the feuds; the grand struggles and lost causes; and the mistakes and misgivings that have characterised his life.

Hitch-22 is, by turns, moving and funny, charming and infuriating, enraging and inspiring. It is an indispensable companion to the life and thought of our pre-eminent political writer.

Narrated by Christopher Hitchens himself shortly before his untimely death, this is a poignant listening experience.

Engaging, insightful and deadpan humour

Christopher tells his story in a way that requires you to concentrate on what he says and rewards the listener well.

I listened to this book whilst redecorating over a number of days. Often I would replay a chapter to ensure I didn’t miss anything out. His stories about friends and acquaintances he meets at world events such as the Iraq wars as well as his view on world leaders give an insight that is scarce in today’s journalism. The final chapter, a conversation, finishes off the book perfectly.

It’s a shame there are too few audiobooks narrated by this author. Enjoy!

Hitchens was one of the foremost minds of our age

His scepticism and playful, if cutting and acerbic, irony pierce through nearly every topic he addresses in this excellent memoir.

Made even better with the man reading his own words, truly bringing to life his thoughts and observations on a life lived to near full.

A man and his time

What made the experience of listening to Hitch-22 the most enjoyable?

This is a rare audiobook. You get a marathon of Christopher Hitchens reading you his first person account of his life and his politics, with his inimitable tone and style.

What did you like best about this story?

The authors background, experiences and relations

Which character – as performed by Christopher Hitchens – was your favourite?

Commander Hitchens

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The explanation of the distance opened between Hitchens and the liberal left

Any additional comments?

Memoirs always risk being an author looking at his own handkerchief after wiping his nose. This one does avoid it with the richness of the content.

Essential reading for Hitch fans

If you could sum up Hitch-22 in three words, what would they be?

Moving, brilliant, insightful.

What did you like best about this story?

That this book is in Christopher Hitchens' own words.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Can't pick out any single scene.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

A bit of both - well, not cry, but who could not be moved by his facing a fatal illness and his untimely death? Many of his ideas resonate with me, so I am admittedly biased in reviewing this memoir.

Any additional comments?

The man was brave, provocative and brilliant.

Recommended

I came to this memoir fairly ignorant about Christopher Hitchens. I decided to listen to it having seen it as an Audible deal of the day offer. I’m very glad I did, and would recommend it to anyone with an interest in recent history, politics, and literature, and this despite finding some sections far more interesting than others.

In 2009 Hitchins was surprised to see the caption "the late Christopher Hitchens" beneath a photo of him. This reminder of his mortality inspired him to write this memoir. He died two years later, rendering that inaccurate caption very fortuitous.

Christopher Hitchens was a thoughtful, intelligent and erudite commentator who rubbed shoulders with interesting people and lived through interesting times, and this book has plenty of provocative opinions and revealing stories.

This is an interesting memoir of an eventful life. There is a problem with the recording from chapter 23 on.

impressive

Don't expect a linear narrative, much in the way of his personal life beyond adulthood or much in the way of anti-religious sentiment (which is why I was interested to listen). However you will get a very good insight into a remarkable man, and a new view of many historic people and events from a unique perspective. In audio book form, the man's voice is simply delicious!

Mind-buzzingly brilliant...

What a life. What a voice: I will listen to this time and time again - has the effect of making one wish to live a more authentic life...

A conversational hit

I never knew anything about Hitch until he was gone and felt a little cheated. This memoir, read by him, has given me immense pleasure and I feel like I have been privileged to meet and converse with the great man at length. Such a huge loss to his family and to those of us who champion critical thinking, I am grateful that Hitch was convinced to do this!

A Masterful Communication

Whether you agree or disagree with the thoughts and beliefs of the late Christopher Hitchens, the depth and quality of his communication is awe inspiring. This book is an open exposure of his path through life with expressive dialogue and is presented with such clear and colourful vocabulary it is in my opinion truly worthy of attention.
