Summary
Shortlisted for: Biography/Autobiography of the Year - Specsavers National Book Awards 2012
David Mitchell, who you may know for his inappropriate anger on every TV panel show except Never Mind the Buzzcocks, his look of permanent discomfort on C4 sex comedy Peep Show, his online commenter-baiting in The Observer or just for wearing a stick-on moustache in That Mitchell and Webb Look, has written a book about his life.
As well as giving a specific account of every single time he's scored some smack, this disgusting memoir also details:
- The singular, pit bull-infested charm of the FRP (‘Flat Roofed Pub’)
- The curious French habit of injecting everyone in the arse rather than the arm
- Why, by the time he got to Cambridge, he really, really needed a drink
- The pain of being denied a childhood birthday party at McDonalds
- The satisfaction of writing jokes about suicide
- How doing quite a lot of walking around London helps with his sciatica
- Trying to pretend he isn’t a total **** at Robert Webb’s wedding
- That he has fallen in love a LOT, but rarely done anything about it
- Why it would be worse to bump into Michael Palin than Hitler on holiday
- That he’s not David Mitchell the novelist, despite what David Miliband might think

A very enjoyable listen. You have too love David Mitchell. The way he thinks about things makes I can relate too and he tells it all in an amusing way.

Funny and honest.
A very enjoyable listen, especially as read by its author. The sort of book that made me, by turns, quietly contemplative or audibly amused.

Great Stuff
In some parts you can see Mark clearly shiny through the book. Driving lessons in particular.
Don’t listen on public transport unless you are good at stifling your laugh.

Legend
Excellent. I love David Mitchell. Really funny! Goes off on one as he normally does but gets the right balance between telling his story and making fun of various aspects of life. The bit on Atheism was bollocks but you can't always get it right.

A history of David Mitchell in anecdotes and rants
If you enjoy the David Mitchell that rants on Soapbox and TV this is an excellent listen. The first box particularly is almost entirely funny stories and rants about small issues.
The second half of the book has more detail on his theatrical background and non-comedy experiences but I was surprised how interesting I found it.
In the end I listened to the whole audio book in about 3 days and loved it all. However I suspect I could enjoy the man reading just about anything.

Brilliant!
I cannot recommend this highly enough. A perfect example of when an autobiography is made infinitely more enjoyable and effective through narration by the author. It was hilarious and interesting, and struck the perfect balance between stories from childhood/career with interesting or silly side notes. He has written it very cleverly, as it is chronological but interspersed with other little stories of side notes (the walking around london setting is brilliant) so it doesn't read like a tedious listing of events. Loved every minute of it!

reassuringly funny ramble
If you could sum up David Mitchell: Back Story in three words, what would they be?
Reassuring. Funny. Endearing
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Definitely lots of laughing. Definitely no crying.
Any additional comments?
This is a very clever man (he'll have you know) and his use of our language is a treat to listen to, particularly in his own narration - it would have lost a lot of his personality and delivery had anyone else read it

Mitchell is brilliant.
Just finished listening to it through for a second time, and it's even better than I remember. So funny, warming and genuinely entertaining throughout. Mitchell is of course brilliant at narration too, as you'll know from TV, or from his Soapbox on YouTube. Unmissable audiobook.
