Summary
David Attenborough reads his own bestselling memoir
David Attenborough is the acknowledged voice of nature, loved and revered worldwide for his groundbreaking wildlife documentaries. Over the course of his long BBC career, David has risen from trainee producer to award-winning film-maker, and in Life on Air, he tells the extraordinary stories of the people and animals he has met along the way.
We hear of his earliest days in television; his stint as Controller of BBC2, during which he introduced colour TV to Britain; and his encounters with luminaries such as Montgomery, Anthony Eden, Benjamin Britten and the Queen. Here, too, are tales of his travels to some of the most far-flung corners of the globe, including New Guinea, Borneo, Paraguay and the Australian outback, and the rare creatures he captures on film: from the exotic birds of paradise and the elusive Indri lemurs to the endangered Komodo dragon.
Featuring behind-the-scenes accounts of the making of his landmark natural history series, beginning with the pioneering Zoo Quest and concluding with Life in Cold Blood, this wonderful memoir - read by David Attenborough himself - recounts the highlights of a remarkable life in broadcasting.

A wonderful easy listen
Where does David Attenborough - Life on Air: Memoirs of a Broadcaster rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is a great book for really easy listening. It's basically a series of short stories that make up David's life so you can listen in short sessions or for long periods and follow the story easily. It's enjoyable and fascinating and at the same time something of a geography and history lesson.
What was one of the most memorable moments of David Attenborough - Life on Air: Memoirs of a Broadcaster?
His trip to Komono on a ship with a captain who turned out to be an arms dealer on the run and not a captain at all.
What does David Attenborough bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
His voice! David Attenborough has one of the best recognised and most loved voices in the world and to listen to him telling his own stories is like being read to be your grandfather.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, I enjoyed the short stories over a few weeks.

Attenborough kindles curiosity and wonder .
Listening to this book is like being led through the years by a friend.
The changes in technology and modes of travel, the fascinating people he met and worked with along the way,and his enthusiasm for all life on earth, and the ingenuity of his co film-makers,come across so clearly you are almost sitting on the rocks beside him watching creatures do their thing.Although he tells you about hard work, enduring discomfort and danger, its never a complaint and never exaggerated, it's just part of the story.I admire him even more now.All teachers should read this book to understand what good communication is about.I learned a huge amount about how the world has changed over the last century without even noticing..I thought the book was about film-making.
I just loved it.

Excellent!
This was an excellent listen from start to finish. I usually listen to dramatised readings but Attenborough has such integrity and his subject is so fascinating there is 'drama' throughout. I had no idea he was such an intrepid explorer. He takes you into challenging and dangerous places and tells you his experiences there in his calm unassuming way. The delivery is wise not histrionic. And given the length, excellent value. I loved every minute.

Attenborough at his very best
What made the experience of listening to David Attenborough - Life on Air: Memoirs of a Broadcaster the most enjoyable?
I was absolutely absorbed from the moment he started telling about his early career in broadcasting and the way the BBC programmes developed across the decades.
What does David Attenborough bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
He makes you feel as if you are sharing the adventures and he is so elequent you can picture the event as if you were standing with him. There was so much more to the programmes than we ever realised and of course such a lot of challenges faced.
His humour is dry and makes you smile you just don't hear it on the TV.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I could not put the book down and did not want it to end.
It gives you a yearning to see more of his programmes and catch up with more books
Any additional comments?

What's not to like about Attenborough - interesting story about his life and the development of the British television as well as the technological mile Stones reached.

Fascinating and wonderfully read
Amazing to hear this first-hand account of making these iconic programmes. An absorbing trip around the planet - and through the early development of TV from someone who was at the heart of it.
