Summary

From USA Today best-selling author Emily McIntire comes an angsty second-chance romance and the first interconnected stand-alone in the Sugarlake series.

Alina Carson meets Chase Adams when she’s 11 years old, after he moves in down the street carrying nothing but a chip on his shoulder and dimples in his cheeks.

Immediately she falls, loving him before she even knows what loving is. But becoming best friends with Chase’s little sister means that he’s off-limits, no matter how much their connection screams for something more.

Chase never cared much for following the rules. Abandoned by everyone who was supposed to love him, he’s broken and insecure, choosing to push others away before they have a chance to hurt him. But there’s something about the girl with golden hair, and before he can stop himself, he’s sneaking through her window, whispering his deepest secrets beneath her glow stick stars.

As time goes on and they get older, he decides to give their love a chance, no matter what anyone else thinks. But old habits die hard, and when tragedy strikes, Chase is back to doing what he does best.

Ruining everything.

Chase disappears, and years pass, leaving Alina with no choice but to pick up her broken pieces and move on. Until one day, he’s back. All grown up and taking over his family’s business.

When Alina and Chase are thrown together and forced to work in the same building, old feelings resurface, and Alina quickly realizes that Chase is on a mission, determined to right the wrongs of his past.

Starting with her.

Beneath the Stars is the first interconnected stand-alone in the Sugarlake series. It contains mature and graphic content. Listener discretion is advised. Full list of TW can be found on author's website.

No drama, just action

I really enjoyed how this book has been written. With lots going on there’s not too much drama that can be annoying. A great performance from both Steve and Sarah.

I Can't

This is such an absolutely beautiful story. I can't even begin to explain how much I loved it. I didn't want to stop reading. There were many sad parts in it. I won't lie. But the redemptions in it were amazing.

Angsty.

Beneath The Stars is heavy on the angst. Very heavy and I would be remis not to give a trigger warning for addiction.

Right from their childhood Alina and Chase are drawn to each other. When he and his younger sister move into her neighbourhood. They have been victims of neglect due to their addict mother and negative foster homes but they are loved by this new family. She is his little sisters best friends and for many years she was off limits due to their age difference.

As they get older they do stop fighting the attraction but the path to true love does not run smoothly. Both experience devastation, loss and have their own battles. Immaturity, life events and ignorance play a part in tearing them down.

Fast forward some time and older, a bit wiser, they meet again. One big point that I took away is that communication is key and these two right to the end need to work on it.

Probably my favourite character from this book was Jackson.

Once again Sarah Puckett and Stephen Campbell absolutely nailed it with the narration. Clear speech, great character representation and excellent acting.

A Small Town Second Chance Romance

Beneath The Stars by Emily McIntire is a small town second chance romance that I listened to on audio narrated by Sarah Puckett and Steve Campbell. This is the first book in the Sugarlake Series.

The Book does come with a caution "Beneath the Stars is a full-length, interconnected standalone that features strong language, explicit sexual scenes and mature situations which may be considered triggers for some. Reader discretion is advised."

This is the first book of Emily's that I have read and it definitely won't be my last. I was pulled in from the first chapter and couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. I really enjoyed the relationship between Chase and Alina. Their relationship was a roller coaster but you couldn't help but root for them. I loved getting both of their points of view throughout the book. It really brought the story to life.

I can't wait for the next book in the series Beneath The Stands is released on audio so I can get Becca and Eli's story.

Sarah and Steve did an amazing job on the narration! They both really know how to bring a story to life. I could feel the emotions that Chase and Alina were going through.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves small town romances, second chance romances, or contemporary romance.

Batten down the emotional hatches!

I received this audiobook via a promo code at my request and this is my voluntary review.

Chase Adams. How to explain Chase:
"Maybe if I hadn’t met my soul mate when I was thirteen, and lost her when I was twenty, I would be able to feel for Marissa the way I suspect she’s starting to feel for me. But, I don’t. And it isn’t fair to Marissa for me to pretend otherwise. I’ve tried to let her loose, urged her to meet someone who can give her everything she wants. But she sticks around, showing up and putting her p*ssy on a platter. So for now, I’ll give her the parts of me I can."

Alina knew she loved Chase since she was 11, and through his deep seated neurotic 'I'm not good enough' inner monologue, he screws up... by screwing around... but all these years later he's all grown up and he's never gotten over Alina, she's determined to forget them and carve out even a fraction of a life without the shadow of their connection that is always hovering. I've been where they are, so this is very relatable for me. Narration was perfect and this story knocked me for 6, if I could give it 10 Stars, I would.

Heart wrenchingly good!

This book brought out a lot of emotions in me I wasn't prepared for.

Alina and Chase have grown up together, they are meant to be but sometimes life gets in the way and royally destroys your plans. Which of course is exactly what happens to these two. Can they get over the hurt and pain of the past and move forward? Only time will tell.

The hurt and pain in this book was so raw and real. The emotions were felt! I loved it and hated it all at the same time. It was hard to endure but oh so worth it. Alina's life did not go according to plan at all and that hit way closer to home than I expected. Chase has been dealing with his own battles and that was hard to witness, again too close to home. BUT... With that being said, I loved watching the growth of these two and the mutual respect they learned for each other.

Sarah Puckett and Steve Campbell did an amazing job of bringing all the emotions to life and really making the reader FEEL what the characters were going through!

Beneath the Stars

This book has so many highs and lows that I was hooked just to see a happy ending. I love all of these characters and seeing them grow into adults and learning from their mistakes was written so beautifully that I felt like I was right there with them. Everything about this book was amazing and that last sentence.... it had me bawling like a baby and begging for the next in this book. Narration is perfect in every way!

Second chance love

I love a good love story and I’m a sucker for second chance romance and this hit the nail. I do wish there was a bit more groveling because who doesn’t love that but it was a great start to the series and I’ll definitely be back for more.

A good second chance romance.

A really well done narration in my opinion. Narrated by Sarah Puckett and Steve Campbell in alternative pov's the narration drew me in beautifully.

A story that spans from childhood into adulthood as Chase and Alina try to navigate a relationship. Chase is older than Alina so when he leaves for college they try the long distance thing but Chase has a few demons in his past that even though he thinks he doing yney right thing he trust someone he shouldn’t causing him to lose Alina. A few years later he brought back to their home town and thrown into Alina's path. Could this be his second chance to show her what she really means to him or us it just too late.

An enjoyable story from a new to me author.

A slow burn romance!

Alina and Chase know each other since they were kids. They separate to find themselves together again years later. Chase is broken, never committed to anyone (even a 3yr old hookup). There is drama, tears, romance and lots of sexy times. Finally they find they HEA. It wasn’t easy though. The narrators did a fine job!
