Summary

Step into an adventure that set the country alight.

Anna McNuff had never run a mile without shoes on before. And yet, one British summer, she set off to run a (very) wiggly route from the Shetland Islands to London–on a mission to cover the distance of 100 marathons…in bare feet.

Fuelled by a desire to push mind and body to the limit (and to drink tea and eat biscuits), she zigzagged over rugged coastlines, through small villages, across windswept moors, along golden sandy beaches, and even down the odd picturesque A-road. As the journey gathered pace, she was joined by thousands of other runners and soon learned that, even though she was (usually) the only one in bare feet, this was far from a solo journey.

Barefoot Britain is warm-hearted, funny and painfully honest–featuring remote islands, big cities, kind strangers and setbacks-a-plenty. It’s a story which reveals the messy reality of taking on a crazy idea, and above all, shows how one person’s will to dig deep and carry on can encourage others to do the same.

Heartwarming and humor

Another great book by Anna. I was so excited to see the book in Audible, waiting days for a new credit to pop up so I could start to listen. I love that Anna reads the book herself, she really brings the book to life. Amazing adventure and achievement. Inspiring me to take on an adventure of my own - but maybe with my trainers as well! Great Book Anna!

Inspirational to all

I listened to Anna’s Barefoot Britain whilst trying to walk 100 miles in March for WWF. Nowhere near as impressive I know, but it was great motivation for pushing myself to do hikes that were longer and more adventurous than I normally would… and feeling well chuffed with myself at the end. Especially when I kept going after gouging my face on some barbed wire and encountering flooded routes. Unfortunately not fuelled by sausage rolls but I didn’t burn quite the calories to allow it :o)
I hope many young people… girls especially but also boys… hear her honest story of the highs and the lows, the emotions and struggles, and the beauty of Britain, and decide that they too can go on their own adventures and be brave. Whatever they may be.
Anna has such a friendly, welcoming way of reading it draws you right in and you feel you are listening to someone you know talk. It is such a comforting listen. Mainly as I felt id travelled her journey… without actually having to do thousands of miles.
I ended up listening to it twice as my 7 year old son heard part in my car and wanted to listen… and he has since been running up and down the pavement barefoot to be like Anna!

Loved every minute …

Awesome from top to toe ….. I laughed and cried and took long hard deep looks inwards. It is as if the book was written to my soul. Thank you 🙏 and I certainly will be embracing adventures and stepping out of what is comfortable, because why not 🤷‍♀️ ….. I will however keep my shoes on

Bonkers and brilliant

This is a must listen if you like bonkers but brilliant adventure stories. Anna's raw honesty is lovely, and makes you realise going on an adventure is not all roses, which is so refreshing. The story really had me captivated, and I love Anna's energetic narrating style, I was sorry to finish the book.

Anna McNuff you are a triumph!

Having thoroughly enjoyed Anna’s earlier adventure books, and followed her barefoot Britain challenge as it unfolded I couldn’t wait for this book!

Anna’s honesty and sense of humour show why she is an inspiration to young and old alike, the Brownies are lucky to have her!!

As an older runner I certainly agree with the adventure running sentiment, my runs across the South Downs with Isla the cockapoo are great release from the day today. Anna’s adventures have lead me to look for less beaten paths, for which thank you!

Keep up the good work, although a young family may curtail a little of the madness! Hopefully not!
