About this listen

'Jo peered through the panel and saw - nothing. Yet someone had entered the cabin. She could hear hoarse breathing and stealthy padding footsteps. A beaker rose in the air of its own accord, then dropped to the floor...' After pursuing the Daleks through space, Doctor Who lands on the planet of Spiridon, in the midst of a tropical jungle... and finds more than Daleks. Vicious plants spitting deadly poison, invisible Spiridons attacking from all sides and, in hiding, a vast army waits... for the moment to mobilise and conquer. Mark Gatiss, who has written and appeared in several Doctor Who episodes, reads Terrance Dicks' complete and unabridged novelisation, first published by Target Books in 1976. Fantasy Science Fiction Time Travel Fiction

Critic reviews

Terrance Dick’s Target novelisation of Terry Nation’s teleplay is a model of economy – all action and dialogue – and Gatiss’s sometimes breathless narration complements this perfectly, while also evoking the excitement with which the original Target novels were read by fans in the 1970s. (Stephen Elsden)
Dicks’ novel... imbues the story with a freshness and vitality which was lacking on screen. (Matt Adams)

Mark Gatiss reads this novel with a smooth urbanity and charm worthy of Jon Pertwee himself, very exciting and enjoyable.

Great reading and story.

Any additional comments?

I admit I didn't expect to enjoy this audiobook so much! I'm not particularly a Doctor Who fan but had a spare credit and I'm so glad I took the chance.

The production is excellent with a wide range of sound effects to complement the story and Mark Gatiss' narration is perfect throughout. The overall story arc is quite predictable - escapes may only be made in the nick of time, the bad guys never shoot straight, etc, but there's lots of interesting detail and I liked being able to picture the planet and its bizarre environment from the description. It's all great fun.
Perhaps I'm not converted to total Whodom but am sure I will listen to more of the audio stories in the future.

Pure joy!

A classic tale from third Doctor. A tale starring the Daleks, always goes down well!
First class storytelling from Mark Gatiss. If you enjoy the tales of the early Doctor's, you'll enjoy this classic story.

Enjoyable listen
