About this listen

Scotland, 1745. The Doctor, Ben and Polly arrive in Scotland after the Battle of Culloden and meet a band of Highlanders who are fleeing in defeat. Their Laird is injured and the three offer to help tend his injuries. Polly and Kirsty McLaren, the Laird's daughter (played in a guest appearance by Hannah Gordon) go to fetch some water but while they are gone the others are captured by Redcoat troops. Things become worse when the group is taken again - this time by the crooked Solicitor Grey, who is part of the West Indian slave trade. The prisoners, Ben amongst them, are bundled on board the Annabelle where the wicked Captain Trask issues dire threats of drowning. Meanwhile the Doctor is on dry land confusing all and sundry in a variety of disguises. However, his bumbling manner hides a sharp brain and eventually he, Polly and Ben are reunited in the TARDIS together with the young piper Jamie McCrimmon, who went on to become one of the most popular companions of the series.©2000 BBC Worldwide Ltd; (P)2000 BBC Worldwide Ltd Dramatisations Science Fiction

The next best thing to watching this on DVD - which you can't as it does not exist on video anymore

My favourite ever Doctor Who story. I love historical elements which mix brilliantly with the comical elements we know of Patrick Troughton.

The description may suggest a very stern Doctor Who story but 'The Highlanders' is actually delightful entertainment of the very best quality. This is a cheeky, enjoyable romp through history with Patrick Troughton getting the chance to flex his comic muscles by pretending to be a dotty old German medic.

It's sad that the original episodes have been lost but this works beautifully as an audiobook. Frazer Hines delivers descriptions of the action with charm and brevity. It also worth noting that this storyline sees the debut of his character Jamie.

Essential listening for all Doctor Who fans.

historical fun & frolics

Close your eyes, set Highlanders to play, and instantly travel back in time to the 60s, with the original b&w fuzzy opening credits, and the original music introducing Jamie’s first appearance.
The story is great fun; adventure, humour, cliffhangers, the lot.
Great narration linking the scenes, great performances, if you love the original DW stories, don’t pass this one up.

Wonderful
