Summary

Sail away with the delightful new novel from Gervase Phinn, best-selling author of The School at the Top of the Dale.

A summer cruise should be just the ticket for a few weeks of luxury and relaxation—but for the passengers and crew of the Empress of the Ocean, the sights of the Mediterranean are nothing compared to the excitement on board....

For bickering couple Albert and Maureen, the trip might prove a much-needed escape—or the final straw. Elegant Frances de la Mare is determined to hobnob with the right kind of people—but her penthouse suite proves lonelier than she ever imagined. Meanwhile, precocious 12-year-old Oliver discovers that guidebooks don't teach you everything, sparks fly when the port lecturer finds himself upstaged by a popular author, dancers Bruce and Babs can't keep in step, and cruise expert Neville just wants someone to speak to.

But as unlikely friendships are forged, feuds bubble in the laundry room, and everyone jostles for a seat at the captain's table, they might find all their plans going overboard....

Warm, funny and uplifting, this is the perfect escapist story for fans of Gervase Phinn's Yorkshire novels, as well as listeners of Celia Imrie, Alan Titchmarsh and Maeve Haran.

"[Gervase Phinn is] a worthy successor to James Herriott, and every bit as endearing." (Alan Titchmarsh, best-selling author)

Loved the book

I thought the two Sisters were very good and funny, well thought out. I love to hear Gervase phinn read and talk, he has a comfortable voice which is nice and easy on the ears.ni thought the book was just the right amount and not over dramatic just right .

A fantastic listen.

This was such a great listen. I genuinely feel like I have been on this cruise with these passengers. The whole book is full of great characters.

I highly recommend this audio book. . Gervase is such a talented author who brings out so much warmth in his novels. And he reads his own words in such unique manner.

Thoroughly enjoyed this.

Thank you.

A story you will be sorry it finishes!

Gervase Phinn at his best describing the quirks of the various characters who people this novel. Not in a Yorkshire school this time, but on the high seas - a wealth of characters who interact and the story meanders through a cruise and the effect it has on them all. Well worth five starts for story and performance.

Feel good book

I love this book, it is a real mood lifter and full of humour and knowledge at the same time. I must have listened to it a dozen times in the short time it has been released. Gervais Phinn has done it again - superb

What a story!

Gervase Phinn captured everything there is to know about our fellow beings and he delivers the array of characters perfectly as they cruise the Med.
This heartwarming story made me laugh out loud and at times brought a lump to my throat. For the whole 31 chapters it hugged me like a comfort blanket that I didn’t want to let go of.
Worthy of 5* .

Cast Adrift In A Sea Of Characters

This is a short review because I have nothing to say except that this book is a joy. A wealth of interesting, amusing, funny, sympathetic and rich characters - their lives, troubles, joys and idiosyncrasies thrown together and jumbled up in a delightful mess. If you like to sit at a café, watch people and eavesdrop on the conversations of strangers, this is the book for you.
Just one tiny complaint. Although it was good to hear this narrated by the author himself, I feel that the pauses (presumably when sentences had to be re-read due to errors) could have been edited tiger much better. The sudden change in intonation and pace mid sentence was frequently off-putting, but not to the detriment of the overall flow.
An excellent offering from Mr. Phinn. Top marks.
