Summary
Anchors can stop magic. That makes them the most needed and hated people in all the Northern lands.
Shunned for their connection to the evil that is magic, Anchors are not welcome anywhere in north for long. The ability to absorb magic, to destroy magical creatures, and even "see" magic will eventually drive them mad, and lead to their entering the descent, a place where they all eventually must go.
Layten Grayread, separated from his friends after the folly of Blood Point, now finds himself inside the Anchorhold. An ancient location in Ture itself, the Anchorhold is the one place an Anchor is always welcome. For Layten is an Anchor, and a strong one.
Elsewhere, Hopwell and Wix hope their friend is alive, and resolve to find him one way or another. But when Calmar, the southern caster who nearly killed Layten at Blood Point uses his new abilities to strike the north directly, he shatters the stability of the free lands, and heart of Hopwell Lewin.

wow things are getting interesting
Wow, the author has created another entertaining and captivating story line to keep both his reader and listeners interested. You definitely need to have read the previous books and in the correct order, in order to appreciate this one, as things get complicated for our hero's and the adventure isn't over. I am loving this series as you never know what is going to happen (or even who will make it through to the end). The story is packed full of friendship, betrayal, action, surprises and twists. I can't wait for the next book to see what has happened to Layten and his friends, because yes it does end on a cliff hanger.
After being abandoned by the anchor, Layten and his friends find themselves in very different places. Hopwell and Wix made it out of the battle just barely and find themselves on a ship heading home with no idea what happened to there friend. Layten left behind with no friends to help, does the one thing he can he picks up and Anchors staff and changes his life for every. He wakes up in the Anchorhold with the news he is the thing he hated most in the world an Anchor, an absorber of magic. Once his friends receive good and bad news, they desert there posts and start there travels to find there friend and aid him in his journey, facing many troubles along the way. Layten in the mean time tries up understand what becoming an Anchor means, especially with a power struggle and a war going on. Can the three friends over come what is in store for them?
I like the narrator. He makes it a pleasant story to sit back and let the magic flow.

A complex magical world is thrillingly revealed
This audiobook starts with a great dramatic crisis and ends with one as well, as we learn more about the complex magical world that Joshua Cook has created and which David Gurney brings to life so brilliantly. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the narration and now I'm left waiting for the next one in the series. Hopefully not too long!
