Summary

Dark secrets and hidden sorrows abound in Santa Montefiore’s spellbinding new novel set in war-torn Italy and the streets of New York.

New York, 1979.

It is Thanksgiving and Evelina has her close family and beloved friends gathered around, her heart weighted with gratitude for what she has and regret for what she has given up. She has lived in America for over thirty years, but she is still Italian in her soul.

Northern Italy, 1934.

Evelina leads a sheltered life with her parents and siblings in a villa of fading grandeur. When her elder sister Benedetta marries a banker, to suit her father’s wishes rather than her own, Evelina swears that she will never marry out of duty. She knows nothing of romantic love, but when she meets Ezra, son of the local dressmaker, her heart recognises it like an old friend.

Evelina wants these carefree days to last forever. She wants to bask in sunshine, beauty and love and pay no heed to the grey clouds gathering on the horizon. But nothing lasts forever. The shadows of war are darkening over Europe and precious lives are under threat....

Interesting but meandered a lot

I enjoyed this but not as much as many of Santa Montefiore’s books. It was beautifully written and the characters seemed very real. The story itself was certainly interesting but I kept waiting for something exciting or for a bit of drama but it never seemed to happen. At the end I was left with a feeling of anticlimax. I suspect Genevieve Gaunt’s superb narration was the reason I stayed with it!

Totally enjoyable

Loved every minute of this book, even though I was able to predict some of the story. However I did not predict all. Wonderfully read by Genevieve Gaunt
Highly recommend this book xx

Excellent - just could have done with more detail

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The story was really lovely and I would like to read the book and would easily listen to it again, hence my 5 stars. Despite this I did have one criticism which is that at times it felt like it was being rushed. Big chucks were glossed over or described reflecting back rather than being part of the narrative. The story would have been much longer had those sections been fully explored, however I think it would have enhanced the story even more. Despite that, what was in the narrative was beautiful and I enjoyed immensely.

Another Gem

Thoroughly enjoyed this book by Santa - I have become rather addicted to her novels. They are full of charm, intrigue, and easy listening on my long car journeys. On to the next! Thank you Santa.

Story was Excellent but….

I struggled with this book a bit and only sheer determination made me finish it. I have read most of this authors books but found this one a bit of a jumble the story could have been told in a more organised manner for my taste.

Beautifully written

The cover inspired me to listen to this book. It was a little bit slow to start off with however once I got into it I was completely hooked. What a beautiful love story in so many ways. I think it would make a lovely film.
