Summary

The ideal lady wears lace, speaks quietly, and never - under any circumstances - fixes an automobile. But Gwyn Ruthers has never cared two snaps about being the ideal lady. With the war to end all wars exploding across the English Channel, she leaves behind her restrictive life as a chauffer's daughter to serve in an all-female ambulance unit in France. She's not about to let her social status or gender prevent her from serving her country. Not even a handsome captain can distract her from her mission. Most of the time.

Captain William Crawford wouldn't wish the ravages of war on any man, much less the captivating woman who insists on driving into battle instead of staying safely at home. He can't deny that the troops need more medical help but not when it puts innocent women in danger. How can he lead his men against the Jerries while worrying about Gwyn's safety?

Bound together by circumstances, Gwyn and William can't stop the love growing between them. Can their relationship survive, or will it become another casualty of war?

lovely story

lovely story but lost something with the narration unfortunately. The dialogue from William in particular. This book would probably have been much better read rather than on audible.

Rather monotone delivery

Sadly this was spoilt for me by the reader. Rather lacking in expression. Great story though!

Nice story spoilt by the reader

It was/ struggle to persevere with this as the reading is so spectacularly flat and clipped. I’ve had many more in-depth less pithy wartime stories than this , not their finest hour I’m Afraid

Story Ruined

This is a really good story but totally destroyed by the very bad narrator. Am struggling to get to the end. Won't be listening to any by her again.

Great story

I found this story gripping and kept me listening. A real insight to the hardship of war. The narration was excellent with all the different accents Gwyn Olson performed. I’d highly recommend this book.

Another decent book ruined by the narrator

Enjoyed the story but it was ruined by the strange style of the narrator. Another name to avoid when selecting what to listen to.

Absolutely Stunning!

A great story about realising what you really want in life and what you would do to get it.

Gwen is a passionate & strong willed woman wanting to make a difference in the war, even when all the odds are against her. She experiences the horrors first hand but it only inspires her to work harder, even when staring into the barrel of a German rifle.

This book is an absolute treasure. It describes WW1 and what went on behind the scenes at the field hospitals and in the ambulances, all while narrating one of my favorite love stories yet.

I never thought of the ambulances and hospitals that dealt with the repercussions of the intense fighting we hear so much about. This book gave me that new perspective

The characters are so deep and real, with relatable views and emotions.

The setting is harsh yet beautiful in its brokenness.

The narration was good, but she could work on her deeper male voices, and adding a bit more emotion in them.

I loved the humor snuck in here and there, as well as the poppies that represented finding the good in the unimaginable bad.

Thank you so much J'nell Ciesielski(will be devouring all your others), Gwyn Olson & Audible for this treasure.
