Thrilling, authentic, and action packed, this novel introduces soldier hero Marcus Valerius: a centurion stationed on Hadrian's Wall in the second century during a revolt against the Roman Empire.
Marcus Valerius Aquila has scarcely landed in Britannia when he has to run for his life - condemned to dishonorable death by power-crazed emperor Commodus. The plan is to take a new name, serve in an obscure regiment on Hadrian's Wall, and lie low until he can hope for justice. Then a rebel army sweeps down from the wastes north of the wall, and Marcus has to prove he's hard enough to lead a century in the front line of a brutal, violent war.

Excellent story line, brilliant narration and damn realistic!!! Truly worth listening to as it brings the last years of the second century Roman world to life.
An excellent yarn. The battle scenes had realism and authenticity. Performance well done. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to more.
Not the best but I have listened to a lot worse. Nice to be in the roman legions era, made a good change from the detective stories I often listen toot
The battle scenes one was there in the midst of the blood and glory, per haps not for the very screemish
don't know as the first book I have listened too
I mainly listen to Historical Fiction...:-)
Really pleased this has finally been put on audible. Fantastic series and brilliant to be able to listen to it from the beginning at last!
I was recommended this as a great Roman Army story, with accurate Roman Army details and it was. The reader Saul Reichlin did good voices and kept them to the characters. Exciting to the end and there others in the series!
This is my kind of book. Story line good. Very well written, with a good balance between detail and story line. I'm looking forward to continuing with the series.
Narrator is excellent, story is compelling, if a little predictable.
For anyone who has read and appreciated Bernard Cornwalls Sharpe series, then this should be for you. This is basically a more educated Richard Sharpe running around ancient Roman Britain.
I generally love historical fiction and this didn't disappoint.
Great story with even better narration... Saul is amazing.
I feel like I'm in for the long haul with this series.
personally for me yes, working outside on a farm doing repetitive jobs its brilliant to escape
foolishly bought this randomly without properly checking it out, didn't realize that it was only vol 1 of a series of books!
Thankfully after the first couple of chapters I was engrossed and glad to know it isn't a stand alone book.
Shall help me pass many hours feeling like I am not stuck outside at work in the vineyard
"NOT BAD FOR SOMETHING I STUMBLED UPON"
If he had Pebbles narrate this I think we would have a real winning series. Plenty of fast passed action with a good storyline. Worth a listen.
