About this listen

The Falklands War was one of the strangest in British history - 28,000 men sent to fight for a tiny relic of empire 8,000 miles from home.

At the time, many Britons saw it as a tragic absurdity, but the British victory confirmed the quality of British arms and boosted the political fortunes of the Conservative government. But it left a chequered aftermath; it was of no wider significance for British interests and taught no lessons. It has since been overshadowed by the two Gulf Wars, however, its political ramifications cannot be overestimated. Max Hastings’ and Simon Jenkins’ account of the conflict is a modern classic of war reportage and the definitive book on the war. Republished as part of the Pan Military Classics series, The Battle for the Falklands is a vivid chronicle of a call to arms and a thoughtful and informed analysis of an astonishing chapter in the history of our times. Max Hastings, author of over 20 books, has been editor of the Daily Telegraph and the Evening Standard. He has won many awards for his journalism, particularly his work in the south Atlantic in 1982.

The detail and day to day accounts of the battle.

What other book might you compare Battle for the Falklands to, and why?

I have not read all of his books as of yet but I recommend DasReich again for the detail.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The accounting of losses for both sides and the overall look of the AA missile systems.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes

Any additional comments?

I urge you to purchase this novel as it brings back the memories of the Falklands as I feel the war has been somewhat forgotten in our time. It reminds us of what a united country and a excellent armed force is capable of.

The best book Max Hastings has released.

I was serving in the forces at the time and was heavily involved at the time and subsequently too. The tale is well told and explained some of the more baffling events that seemed ridiculous to my lowly view point. it was also interesting to hear of the exploits of friends who performed well. it's true we don't talk about it but interesting to now know. the book is well written and read and didn't become boring at any time. It was a fine time to serve as is pointed out in the text. we just got on with the job in hand without the pointless seeming restrictions and irritations. I am glad I got to go again and enjoy the sights when no one was trying to kill me.

Very well told

I so love my job - long haul driving - only because of audible and the combination of Cameron Stewart/Max Hastings
