Summary

Welcome to Myrtlewood, a quirky town steeped in magic, tea, and mystery…

Life’s a struggle for Rosemary Thorn and her teen daughter, Athena. But their regular troubles are turned upside down after Granny Thorn’s mysterious death.

Despite her cousin's sinister maneuverings, Rosemary returns to Myrtlewood and the sprawling, dilapidated Thorn Manor. There's more to the old house than meets the eye, as Rosemary and Athena soon find out—in a whirlwind of magic, adventure, mystical creatures, and endless cups of tea.

Life in Myrtlewood would be bliss if Rosemary could only clear her name in a certain murder investigation, solve the mystery and stay out of mortal peril—for at least a little while!

A small town with endless secrets, strange activities, and a house with a mind of its own.

Disappointed

Really wanted to like this book, but the narrator spoiled it completely. The main character sounded like a fed up old woman. The pause at the end of each sentence and the countless times we heard ‘Rosemary said’ was so annoying. Disappointed.

unbearable narrator

gave up listening to the audiobook after the 4th chapter, the voices the narrator puts on are so off putting, Athena sounds like a spoiled annoying brat and Rosemary sounds like an angry old man, not to mention the weird voice and accents the narrator gives the other characters. Might read the book and see where it goes, some elements I enjoyed from the storyline so far, but not convinced yet.

Could have been so much better!

I’m quite at a loss as to how to really review this book. It has a lot of potential and a lot to offer. It’s cosy, I loved the idea of the house and of an unapologetically magical village. The idea of coming into a magical inheritance and the witchy scenes were great but my goodness, this book was written in a rush! Some passages were really poor and badly thought out, the book was generally not very well written and the 2 main protagonists could really grate at times, particularly Rosemary who comes across as a bumbling idiot for most of the story! I must admit as well that the narrator was hard to listen to at times. I got used to her in the end, as I wanted to like this book, but it has to be said that the whole experience was very average.

Story is good narrator not so much!

The story is great but the voices given to one of main characters by the narrator is very annoying. Rosemary sounds like a very old creepy man very similar to the male voices attempted. Ruin the my enjoyment of the story.

It took a couple of chapters…

I loved the story but it’s taken a while to get used to the reading style. I kept wondering how much more humorous it would have been if it were read by the likes of Zara Ramm. Every sentence seemed ominous and a bit disjointed with the emphasis on … not the word I would have put it on… But don’t let that put you off because despite that I really enjoyed this, the first book. Maybe by the end of book two I will be wishing that she had read other books I want to read.
The story seems well written and a good lead up to a magical series without focusing on too many similar characters that can often confuse the storyline.
Looking forward to seeing how this grows with plenty lying ahead to keep me going for quite a while

could have been great

I gave up on this book due to the painfully slow narration. Otherwise I think I would have really enjoyed it. May try just reading it.

Lovely cosy magical mystery

This is a lovely cosy small town magical mystery I very much enjoyed listening to.
Some of the storytelling was a little obvious but definitely not the worst I have read. Also the narrators voice was lovely if a little slow, my only criticism of them would be that they muddled which voice they used for who in some of the lengthier scenes. I doubt it with bother most people. Those are my only criticisms and I'll admit they are pretty picky, I really enjoyed the book on the whole.
