Summary

US psychologist Abraham Maslow’s A Theory of Human Motivation is a classic of psychological research that helped change the field for good. Like many field-changing thinkers, Maslow was not just a talented researcher, he was also a creative thinker - able to see things from a new perspective and show them in a different light. He studied what he called exemplary people such as Albert Einstein, Jane Addams, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Frederick Douglass rather than mentally ill or neurotic people.

Maslow generated new ideas, forging what he called "positive" or "humanistic psychology". His argument was that humans are psychologically motivated by a series of hierarchical needs, starting with the most essential first. His theories parallel many other theories of human developmental psychology, some of which focus on describing the stages of growth in humans.

Worth the purchase, but will leave you wanting.

Good book to read if you’re interested in learning about the basic human needs (original theory, not revised). Inclusion of the redeveloped theory (cognitive, aesthetic and transcendence), an explanation of the foundation of the theory and a critique of the theory would have been better. A good job done in terms of learning about the priority structure of the needs and individual differences. Worth the purchase for those seeking more information than simply the bare, misinterpreted basics provided on a “typical psychology website”.

Editing detracted from the experience

Some passages were repeated, and the delivery was quite fast for an academic read, which overall made it harder to follow than it needed to be.

Mandatory

While it’s a short book, the material described is mandatory knowledge for leadership and self improvement
