Summary
A brisk, concise, and enjoyable overview of Irish history from the Protestant Reformation to the dawn of the 21st century.
Five centuries of Irish history are explored in this informative and accessible volume. John Gibney proceeds from the beginning of Ireland’s modern period and continues through to virtually the present day, offering an integrated overview of the island nation’s cultural, political, and socioeconomic history.
This succinct, scholarly study covers important historical events, including the Cromwellian conquest and settlement, the Great Famine, and the struggle for Irish independence. Gibney’s book explores major themes such as Ireland’s often contentious relationship with Britain, its place within the British Empire, the impact of the Protestant Reformation, the ongoing religious tensions it inspired, and the global reach of the Irish diaspora.
This unique, wide-ranging work assimilates the most recent scholarship on a wide range of historical controversies, making it an essential addition to the library of any student of Irish studies.

A concise and quite balanced summary
Most historical records of Irish history are inevitably tainted with the conscious or unconscious bias of the author. As someone who studied modern Irish history to degree level 20+ years ago, I found this to be a nicely balanced summary and re-introduction to the key events that have shaped our island.

A lot to listen to, well worth it!
A lot of history with great narration. It’s a long story but condensed. Good for an introduction to Irish history.

Excellent History of Ireland
I'm no expert or student. I'm a general listener. I found this excellent short history of Ireland very easy to listen to. It is a sweeping history of a long period of time and gives a good grounding in the history of the island of Ireland. It his very well read by Gerard Doyle. It has filled in some of the blanks in my knowledge and inspired me to learn more. Many thanks for a job well done to all concerned. For anyone interested in knowing more about the history of Ireland, I would recommend this audiobook as a good place to start.

A good dive into the basics of Irish history
I picked this audio book as I have Irish family but I'm yet to visit and realised how little I even know about the history of my country's roots. This book is a really good way to understand the basics without going into too much detail

Impartial, well read, sympathetic
Very well read. A great introductory text with useful references. Anyone with an existing bias will probably not like it.

Error
I am enjoying this audiobook so far, apart from an error made at the beginning of Chapter 1 where it states that Henry 2nd granted the title of Lord of Ireland to his eldest son John - John was in fact his youngest son.

Excellent history of Ireland
I knew very little about Irish history prior to reading this book. It comprehensively explains some of the key moments since 1500.
