Summary

The fourth instalment in Alyssa Maxwell’s A Lady and Lady’s Maid Mystery series.

A Murderous Marriage is sure to please fans of historical cosy mysteries.

Despite being the granddaughter of an earl, Julia Renshaw is under pressure to marry for money - and has settled for the wealthy, and older, Gilbert Townsend. It’s clear to her sister Phoebe and lady’s maid Eva that this is not a love match. At the reception aboard the groom’s yacht, there is tension between Gil and several guests: his best man, his spinster sister and his younger cousin and current heir.

Moreover, the bride has discovered that Gil’s pretty secretary, among others, will be joining them for the honeymoon. When Gil’s drowned body is found floating in the harbour the following morning, Phoebe and Eva must discover who pushed him overboard to exonerate the now arrested Julia of his murder.

Critic reviews

“Maxwell artfully portrays the personal dynamics of English society at the time...readers will hope to see more of the endearing Phoebe and Eva." (Publishers Weekly)

A Murderous Marriage

Great murder mystery, with excellent plot twist. Loads of fun listening to this one. I'm frightened to give too much away if I write much more. Excellent narration from Mandy Weston.

Frothy nonsense

An okay story spoiled by the numerous Americanisms, anachronistic dialogue, historical inaccuracies and a poor grasp of British policing in the 1920s.

Ruined by overt, clumsy and incorrect political lecturing

Cosy story written by an American (too many american words that do/did not exist in early C20th England e.g. 'normalcy' 🙄) and with an irritating tendency to give forth ill-informed selective lectures on the old feudal class system, resulting in a strange pro American mish-mash of poor knowledge leading to anti-union, anti-English, pro-irish, pro-capitalism speeches that keep getting in the way of the narrative.

Have to keep fast forwarding past the historically fact free treatises to the actual story.

Ok to do the cleaning to, as long as I can reach the ff button.

The reader’s wrong pronounciation irritated

Why should a regular voice actress say bought when the context clearly calls for brought. Such shoddy English. Also, when someone gets married their will is null & void and they must make another. So the whole story is flawed.
