En sus biografias hizo profundos estudios de las luchas internas de sus personajes y sus novelas son un excelente retrato del mundo de sus tiempos. Su pesimista autobiografia, "El mundo de ayer", muestra a un humanista que mira al mundo con optimismo. Desilusionado, tuvo que huir de los horrores de la Alemania nazi y acabo su vida por su propia mano, junto con su esposa, en Río de Janeiro en 1941. Laura Garcia, distinguida actriz de teatro, transmite los conflictos internos de ese fascinante personaje.
