大正期に活躍した「新思潮派」の作家、芥川竜之介の代表的な短編小説。初出は「新思潮」［1916（大正5）年］。「鼻」［春陽堂、1918（大正7）年］に収録。原話は「今昔物語集」巻第二十八「池尾禅珍内供鼻語」第二十。長すぎる鼻を気にしている「禅智内供」がどうにかして鼻を短くしようと奮闘する話。執筆当時、久米正雄に高く評価を受けた。
