The first two books in the series flew by but this one was a struggle and like 'Empire Strikes Back' sets the scene for 'Return of The Jedi', - 'Children of Dune' sets the scene for the following instalments. I found it very hard going in places (although I understand the story needs to be spun and background need to be founded so from that viewpoint an excellent work)

For me this was an obstacle that needed to be hurdled in order to get to the finish line. Not a bad book by any means but after the frantic pace of the previous ones this becomes much more about laying foundations, political alliances, old loyalties, new possibilities and new threads - I wouldn't recommend reading it as a stand alone book as this would probably confuse the living daylights out of you, you really need to have read the previous ones for this one.

Don't be put off at all, the 'Dune' series is wonderful as a whole but please read the previous ones before diving into this one.

Dune is THE Sci fi foundation stone, a story so rich that it shocks me just what is achieved with the following tomes.
I read the original as a youngster and now in my 40s am "reading" the follow ups. Each has you reexamine the original with different eyes and perspectives. I can't praise the story or the performance highly enough.

So well observed, a melange of the histories of all societies, a critique and a poetic prophecy. Obviously, if you are here, you have read the preceding volumes. Where does this rank in the series? To me, they exist as one. A vast, Shakespearean Sci-fi which stays with you as a lucid dream, as you ponder on its deeper meanings.

After finishing all the culture series I wanted something a little earlier and decided to go for this series. Loving it and this book has also delivered!

To say Herbert writes well is like saying Newton was clever. Honestly brilliant in its complexity from human nature and connection within and beyond ourselves. Herbert also makes interesting points on how adversity is required to help society progress, and how long term vision and flexibility is required to pull the species forward. And yet he also points out that one must not change to much too quickly, without considering the consequences or such change on society and ecological systems, both are of course entwined. Whilst probably accidental it pertains significantly to our current issues in politics and there environmental impacts.

One of my favourite DUNE books...takes the political and spiritual shenanigans from Dune Messiah and upgrades the complexity and interplay. My only gripe is the choice of accents, both Gurney and Duncan seem to 'ave stumbled oft the set of Eastenders. Cor blimey, Layto, look at flippin' Sarndwum, '
