Summary

DS George Cross delves deep into the world of dirty politics in this Bristol detective series perfect for fans of Peter James and Joy Ellis.

At first glance, the murder of Peggy Frampton looks like a burglary gone wrong. But DS George Cross, with his meticulous methods, thinks otherwise. The victim, a former mayor of Bristol, is now an online influencer whose forthright opinions attract the kind of attention that most people would like to avoid.

There's no shortage of suspects. Cross's investigation will lead him from Peggy's unfaithful husband to her gambling-addicted son, to a scorned former lover with a grudge. But she also has political enemies in her past.

Cross will have to navigate a dark maze of seedy connections to find the truth–but can he do it before the killer strikes again?

The Politician is a part of the DS George Cross thriller series, which can be read in any order.

“I am insanely in love with George Cross, a perfect detective for our time and for all time” STEPHEN FRY

“Sullivan has given us a British detective for the 21st century who will be hard to forget” DAILY MAIL

Another enjoyable chapter in George Cross’s life.

Slow even pace throughout the story, gradually working out who is the murderer, always a surprise as such but beautifully bought to conclusion.
The introduction of new characters I enjoyed and hopefully they will remain. The same as George’s private life, been a bit of a tease through the series , now concluded in a gentle and in keeping manner.
Looking forward to next in the series .

Excellent story d characters

The storyline(s) and characterisation in this DS Cross book are all excellent, as is the writing. What lets this version down is the narration, sadly. It's a great book, but a challenging listen. The narrator's portrayal of each of the characters in the dialogue between themselves is excellent and perfect for each one, but the fact that ALL of the narration is done as if the reader is at the same place on the same Spectrum as George is unnecessary and confusing, as the novel isn't written from George's own perspective, but is ABOUT his role in the investigation. It's a dry, super-clearly ennunciated & clipped delivery and it wears very thin without adding anything to the book. And then there's the issue of the fact that George is tasked with investigating a 'burgulry' throughout the book, and the mysterious invention of the word 'hyper-bowl', when a quick edit could have replaced it with the slightly more appropriate 'hyperbole' that the author had intended... I'll still listen to the next in the series as I love the characters, the writing and the story, but suspect my patience will be tried if it's read by the same narrator.

Great series of detective stories

Dropped one star for story as I worked early on the murderer. However, still an enjoyable listen.

Wonderful series

Loved every minute. Having now read 4 books in the series I feel I have come to know and appreciate the characters. I am looking forward to starting the next one.

Really enjoying this series

I’m working my way through the DS Cross books and really enjoying this slightly quirky detective series. I have to admit I lost track of some of the storylines in this one but I’m finding the slow unfolding of George and his family’s story wonderful. Just means I will re-listen at some point.
Getting used to this narrator, not perfect but I think he did a good job.

This is a well written story

Many twists and turns and narrated clearly. I can easily imagine that this is how a detective 'on the spectrum' would behave. Well presented as were the previous books involving DS Cross

Clever Cross continues!

After taking a break from DS Cross following listening to books 1 - 3 back to back, it was a pleasure to return to his calm, clever methodical way of detection based on evidence not flights of fancy.
As always there's a plethora of murder suspects with tangled lies & lives for Cross & his team to scrutinise, from a taxidermist internet troll to shady property developers and of course the family!
This series hasn't faltered as many police procedurals do but goes from strength to strength with it's character development & compelling storylines that are brilliantly constructed; and there's humour & LOL moments with on the spectrum DS Cross' interactions that never grow tiresome.

Good story let down by the narration

Good plot and characters.
Narrator mispronounced words ( burglary/ hyperbole / seconded ) throughout which was most irritating .

Interesting

I really enjoyed the book, but found the narration a little pedantic at times, over-pronouncing the definite indefinite articles.
