The puritans of the seventeenth century sought to refashion society in accordance with their own beliefs, but they were deep thinkers who were aware of their own fallibility. Today, in the grasp of the new puritans, we see a very different story.
Leading a cultural revolution driven by identity politics and so-called 'social justice', the new puritanism movement is best understood as a religion - one that makes grand claims to moral purity and tolerates no dissent. Its disciples even have their own language, rituals and a determination to root out sinners through what has become known as 'cancel culture'.
In The New Puritans, Andrew Doyle powerfully examines the underlying belief-systems of this ideology, and how it has risen so rapidly to dominate all major political, cultural and corporate institutions. He reasons that, to move forward, we need to understand where these new puritans came from and what they hope to achieve. An important defence of true liberalism and critical thinking
Overall an excellent and intelligently written assessment of culture wars, and a recommended read no matter what your political or personal stance on current debates. For me this book felt a little bit long, especially as much of the topic was already well covered by Douglas Murray in “The Madness of Crowds”. Doyle is not quite as ascerbic as Murray in his writing style, but this book perhaps makes a more palatable read for the more neutral audience. It makes very good points about the necessity of a return to respectful debate, criticising ideas not people, and separating judgements of art from the artist.

Sanity summarised
Great collation of evidence, with examples, of the mad religion enshrined by the social justice ‘elect’ in Britain today. Well worth a listen, reassure yourself that there are more sane people out there than you think. Confirming that Institutional capture must be resisted to restore balance and arrest the rot!

Great
Mr. Doyle did a great job with clarity and reasoning. It is well written, easy to understand and actually easy listen as I did not struggle to finish it in 2 days! It is unputdownable if you can say that about audio. I also appreciated that he narrated the book himself.
If only the ever-increasing undemocratic left listened better and screamed less...

Andrew Doyle at his best
A thinker that articulates his points dispassionately and with clarity. Andrew Doyle is one of the best people do deliver such a book, as a non-Conservative gay man, he cannot be accused of having an agenda in this area. One of the last remaining true liberals who can truly play claim to the label.

Brilliant
Plenty will simply condemn the woke but the author in polite, scholarly and witty terms explains where it all came from, how we arrived at this point and what is to be done. Despite it’s subject I was left feeling uplifted and full of hope. It is an empowering book as we each challenge the 2+2=5 nonsense all around us. Very highly recommended.

The best thing since 'Zeitgeist: The Movie.'
This is an excellent summary of everything that's been going wrong for years. This book is like 'Zeitgeist: The Movie' in the way it strips away fallacy to reveal the truth but doesn't stray into conspiracy theory territory. It's well written and well read. A must read (or listen) for anyone wondering how on earth we managed to arrive at '1984' when we thought we were all aiming for the future as suggested by 'Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure'.
