Summary
Steve Brown joined the army in 1993 as a troubled teenager and left as a respected sergeant-major in 2020. After passing the gruelling Parachute Regiment recruit process and selection for the elite Pathfinder Platoon he travelled the world, deployed on multiple operations, and pushed himself beyond breaking point, both physically and mentally. His story provides a unique insight into Britain's elite airborne forces, including their training, ethos, and indomitable mindset.
From desert to Arctic, jungle to delta, urban to rural, he's experienced some of the most hostile places on Earth. This autobiography covers the extreme highs and lows of a veteran's life with tales of humour, humility, hardship, and heroics.

Gritty Look at a man's life before and after serving in one of Britain's elite units
Great look into the life of a soldier before during and after a full career. civilians will get a sense of the mindset and sacrifice career soldiers make and veterans and serving will relate to many of the struggles, issues, laughs and trauma that soldiers of the last 20years have faced.
highly recommend this book great listen.

Very good honest account of serving one’s country
Terrific book about a bloke who served his country with distinction! A truthful and honest account of life in the military and coping afterwards. Shines a light on what incredible things such people haven’t endure to keep us safe. Great book, genuine and no ego by the author. 🙌🏻👍🏻

Steves honest story
Steve tells us his story from his point of view, with no nonsense or self aggrandising. It comes across as a (brutally) honest account of his experiences, with the introspection and reflection that comes from years of careful thought about what he has been through, where he came from and what made him the person he is today. I have a lot of respect for Steve, and I know him to be a good person. I honestly didnt recognise the person he describes himself as in the beginning of this book, but it takes a lot of personal courage to tell the world about your darker thoughts and motivations without making any excuses for yourself. I dont think Im that brave. He writes about his youth and military experience in a frank and open way, making the reader feel like they are having a conversation across a pub table, but to me the hardest hitting parts of the book were about his mental health struggles. It is often difficult for men to express themselves, and if they cant 'hack it' on their own there is a risk of spiralling into despair. Society tends to hold up paratroopers and marines as the ideal of how men should be; strong, poweful and unbroken by anything thrown at them. Steve shows us this is false, and knowing we are not alone lifts some of the burden of expectation from us, and maybe even lends us a bit of courage too. Thanks Steve.
