KILLING THATCHER is the gripping account of how the IRA came astonishingly close to killing Margaret Thatcher and to wiping out the British Cabinet – an extraordinary assassination attempt linked to the Northern Ireland Troubles and the most daring conspiracy against the Crown since the Gunpowder Plot.

In this fascinating and compelling book, veteran journalist Rory Carroll retraces the road to the infamous Brighton bombing in 1984 – an incident that shaped the political landscape in the UK for decades to come. He begins with the infamous execution of Lord Mountbatten in 1979 – for which the IRA took full responsibility – before tracing the rise of Margaret Thatcher, her response to the ‘Troubles’ in Ireland and the chain of events that culminated in the hunger strikes of 1981 and the death of 10 republican prisoners, including Bobby Sands. From that moment on Thatcher became an enemy of the IRA – and the organisation swore revenge.

Opening with a brilliantly-paced prologue that introduces bomber Patrick Magee in the build up to the incident, Carroll sets out to deftly explore the intrigue before and after the assassination attempt – with the story spanning three continents, from pubs and palaces, safe houses and interrogation rooms, hotels and barracks. On one side, an elite IRA team aided by a renegade priest, US-raised funds and Libya’s Qaddafi and on the other, intelligence officers, police detectives, informers and bomb disposal officers. An exciting narrative that blends true crime with political history, this is the first major book to investigate the Brighton attack.

Excellent

Never normally listen to non fiction but I will from now on. This was fantastic. Despite the fact that I lived through this ( and it came closer to home than I realised) I knew nothing of the detail. Totally engaging and informative. Brilliantly written and wonderfully read.

Outstanding listen

Really tightly packaged throughout. Some nice historical context, followed by detailed accounts of the bombing campaigns of the early 80s. Then it switches nearly to the hunt and aftermath. Anyone who remembers this time or has the slightest interest in terrorism/counter terrorism will lap this up.

Gripping account couldn't put it down

Authentic account of the build up to the bombing, protagonists and ensuing manhunt. Brilliantly told and always made me want to read the next chapter.

Exceptional insight into a remarkable story

I knew nothing about the attempt to assassinate the Prime Minister in Brighton - this book was a great way to understand more about the alienation and resentment of much of the Catholic Irish community in Northern Ireland, and what drove a minority to attempt to kill a large part of the UK govt.
The narration is superb and adds to the overall picture that the book is trying to paint.

Really well researched, written and narrated. Grips you from the beginning and even made me late for work one morning as I sat in the car park to listen to just one more chapter

Gripping and illuminating from start to end

A beautifully paced account of the build-up to the Brighton bombing, its execution and aftermath. Its explanation of the contemporary politics, the culture of both IRA and UK police, and the ultimate part played in history by the explosion, is faultless. The narrator is clear, serious without being over-dramatic, and pitches his reading perfectly. One of the best audiobooks I've ever listened to.
