Summary

'There's never been a more honest or raw memoir . . . and it may just save lives' Daily Mail

'Funny, fascinating, compelling . . . also a wonderful read for fans of Friends' The Times

'HI, MY NAME IS MATTHEW, although you may know me by my full name. My friends call me Matty.'

So begins the riveting story of acclaimed actor Matthew Perry, taking us along on his journey from childhood ambition to fame to addiction and recovery in the aftermath of a life-threatening health scare. Before the frequent hospital visits and stints in rehab, there was five-year-old Matthew, who travelled from Montreal to Los Angeles, shuffling between his separated parents; fourteen-year-old Matthew, who was a nationally ranked tennis star in Canada; twenty-four-year-old Matthew, who nabbed a coveted role as a lead cast member on the talked-about pilot then called Friends Like Us . . . and so much more.

In an extraordinary story that only he could tell - and in the heartfelt, hilarious, and warmly familiar way only he could tell it - Matthew Perry lays bare the fractured family that raised him (and also left him to his own devices), the desire for recognition that drove him to fame, and the void inside him that could not be filled even by his greatest dreams coming true. But he also details the peace he's found in sobriety and how he feels about the ubiquity of Friends, sharing stories about his castmates and other stars he met along the way. Frank, self-aware, and with his trademark humour, Perry vividly depicts his lifelong battle with addiction and what fuelled it despite seemingly having it all.

'An unflinching and often harrowing must-read for 90s pop culture fans' Guardian

'Written with Chandler's trademark sarcasm and self-deprecation' Telegraph

'A hopeful read . . . I started to think of [it] not as a celebrity memoir about addiction, but as an addiction memoir written by a man who understands his own history through the prism of showbiz' Independent

eye opening

I knew he had struggled with addiction but not to the extent he tells of in this book. i think listening in his voice made it more real, the keanu reeves slurs were odd but overall a good book. i would think anyone with who has struggled with addiction would relate

Incredibly powerful and honest.

A raw and honest account of Matty's struggles with addiction. I've been so sad all week with the death of Matty and to hear his voice explaining his reality and the nightmare of this disease has been so sad but insightful. He was able to encapsulate what addiction is and the cycle people go through when continuously relapsing x

What a gentle man

Quite a surreal listen after his sudden passing a week ago. He so wanted to live in his new skin. Quite devastating Matty didn't get the chance. Everyone should listen or read his book as we can all learn from him. RIP Matty. x

Be careful what you wish for

A in-depth and insightful look into the troubled life of a mega star Matthew Perry is very open about his demons and his fight for a normal life.

Listen to the end and ignore the bad reviews

This book is entirely insightful and worthwhile though I’d be remiss if I didn’t give you a heads up that MP comes across as quite unsympathetic at first. Therefore anyone reviews this book labelling MP as a baby or worse hasn’t in my opinion finished the book.

What you learn as you go through this book is that MP is not the ass he initially conveys himself to be and instead has real humility and a truck load of courage.

I don’t know how he’s still alive. There is no doubt that Drugs and Alcohol have destroyed the best part of his first half century on this planet and the battles and demons he faced on and on to get to sobriety… it’s a hell of a story.

In conclusion, after finishing the book I felt inspired. I felt braver. (like Batman!) and overall am pleased I listened to the book to the finish.

Heartwarming and honest

A really heartwarming and honest account of a traumatised life. I remember watching Matthew Perry in friends at the time and I can’t imagine what he was going through now that I’ve listened to this audiobook. I truly hope we see the best of him again.
