Summary

Discover a new detective in a tough city.

DI Tom Mariner thinks he's seen it all, but now he faces an investigation which will push him to the limit. Journalist Eddie Barham is found dead in his home. A syringe in his arm and a note by his side reading, "No More". Open and shut case of suicide? Not for DI Mariner.

Hours before, he saw Barham picking up a prostitute in a bar. And then Mariner discovers Barham's younger brother, Jamie, hiding in a cupboard under the stairs. Jamie must have witnessed his brother's death, but his severe autism makes communication almost impossible. Mariner is determined to connect with Jamie and get to the truth.

Is the journalist's death related to his investigation of a local crime kingpin? What other dark secrets does Jamie hold the key to, and can Mariner keep his relationship professional with Barham's attractive sister, Anna? In a nail-biting conclusion, Mariner races against time to prevent more lives being lost.

Good enjoyable story

I thought this a good story and liked the twist at the end. Half the battle is getting a good narrator who doesn't spoil the story with dodgy accents that offend the ear. His accents were spot on, even my native scottish accent which can be a bit cringy when I hear some narrators attempts.

Worth a listen

Enjoyed the story, narrator good with accents and it kept me listening to the end. Wouldn’t have complained either if I’d spent a credit in it 👍🏼

Good new series

I really enjoyed this discovery on the audible plus catalogue. Both the author and narrator are new to me.
Since listening I have read that it is an updated version of a previously released book - for me it time setting worked really well and was done well I didn't realise that it was written several years ago.
The autism was handled sensitively.

Really enjoyed it so going to binge listen.

Good story

An interesting detective and his sidekick PC, a good story that climaxed in an interesting ending, although it could have been more informative about the apprehension of the killers, employed by the pharmaceutical company.

Great book & enjoyable narration

Really enjoyed this book, totally unexpected plot twist which kept me listening at every opportunity!
As previously commented, it gives a human insight on autism which added to the book’s layers.

Solid story with interesting insights into autism

This was a good listen; a good way to pass the time while on staycation. The only thing I didn't enjoy was the narrator. He was horrible, it was just his pitch was a bit high. Great for the female characters but harder as the main character. Overall a good story, there no leaps of reality so I enjoyed that.

Interesting perspectives

Why on earth did the editors not pull the author up on his complete ignorance about computer viruses. Those sections were truly cringeworthy.

Stuck with it but not impressed

Bit of a drag to listen to. I stuck with it till the end and even the ending was disappointing. The story idea was good, but just a bit dull.
