Summary
An intimate and uplifting memoir by Richard E. Grant.
Born in Swaziland in 1957, Richard E. Grant moved to the UK to pursue his acting career and has been a fixture on our screens since his breakout role in Withnail and I in 1987. When his beloved wife, Joan, died in 2021 after almost 40 years together, she set him a challenge: to find a pocketful of happiness in every day.
The result is this book.
Set between the present day and flashbacks to delightfully indiscreet diary entries recalling landmarks from his remarkable life and glittering career, this is an immensely personal and profound memoir that celebrates and cherishes life’s unexpected joys.
Funny, moving and perceptive, A Pocketful of Happiness is an insight into the life of a much loved British actor.

Unbearably moving; but with REG warmth and humour
If you’ve read or listened to any of Richard E Grant’s previous books, you’ll know he can write - but this takes you into his own personal grief, with detours into his professional life to lighten the journey.
Highly recommended.

Heartbreaking, yet uplifting.
Utterly brilliant. The diary is spliced between anecdotes of Richards acting work, as well as times he had with Joan when she was well, to the time leading upto Joan's passing.
My heart broke for Richard, and Olivia as the story progressed. Joan seemed like a wonderful woman, who was much admired.
If I take anything away from this read, it's that if possible, to never take your loved ones for granted, to love them deeply. The pain we feel at the passing of those we love, is the price we pay for loving them so much.

Emotional Rollercoaster - Wonderful
I cannot think of many reads that are better heard than ‘read’ but this is one of them. To hear every emotion in Richard’s voice as he tells the story of his and Joan’s magical union is like listening to a symphony. I laughed and cried, felt both warmed and deeply saddened in this literary theatre of life. What a wonderful tribute this is to his lovely wife.

Overwhelmingly heartbreaking true life love story
Such a heartbreaking, true life story of love and loss so honestly and openly told. my heart really goes out to Richard and his family, dealing with his wife Joans diagnosis and then her prognosis with such dignity and humour. I've always liked this guy, I love him even more now. he has my utmost respect as does his beloved daughter Oily.

Heartfelt, Raw, REAL
A stunning, beautiful love story that is read by such a humble man, filled with raw emotion; that can only be conveyed by someone who utterly loved, and so painfully and tragically lost, his soul mate and kindred spirit.
Joan; a remarkable woman whom, her best friend describes so beautifully and honestly, that her very being is palpable to the listener.
The authenticity of this love story, is a powerful reminder, that true love does exist.. even after one half of the union departs, to a place far beyond this Earth.
Richard E Grant’s depiction of his experience of companionship, and marriage through his diarised extracts, anecdotes and memories, transmits a recipe for a happy marriage- with expecting, nothing really more, than a pocket full of happiness; a lesson to us all, that love can conquer anything…even death

Full of wholesome love and utterly heartbreaking.
The perfect use of an audio book, getting to hear the author telling stories from his and his family's life.
I felt such a range of intense emotions while listening to Richard E. Grant, and he did such a good job of delivering it. I cannot imagine the effort required to record many of those sentences.
Even knowing from the outset what will happen, I have been crying throughout the last few chapters as though hearing of and feeling the loss of my own loved one.
Thank you for writing and reading this book.
I sincerely hope that Richard E. Grant continues in his quest to find "A Pocketful of Happiness."
