Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

We live under an ideology that preys on every aspect of our lives: our education and our jobs; our healthcare and our leisure; our relationships and our mental wellbeing; even the planet we inhabit – the very air we breathe. So pervasive has it become that, for most people, it has no name. It seems unavoidable, like a natural law.

But trace it back to its roots, and we discover that it is neither inevitable nor immutable. It was conceived, propagated, and then concealed by the powerful few. It is time to bring it into the light - and, in doing so, to find an alternative worth fighting for.

Neoliberalism. Do you know what it is?

GM explains so clearly as always

George Monbiot understands what he is writing about so well and in such depth that he is able to explain really clearly and convincingly what he wants to get across. I am going to re-read it to memorise the main arguments.

A searing indictment of a failed system.

Excellent analysis, perceptive history, well chosen examples and illustrations. I learned a lot and bought the book for my son.

Grassroots Resistance

The clearest, most succinct diagnosis and history of the global virus of neo-liberalism from which all but the very few suffer. Monbiot cheerfully delivers a vital, cautionary tale with the latest climate predictions, the far right gaining in Europe, the Punch and Judy British and US elections looming. A plea for real, grassroots, participatory democracy.

An outstandingly clear and entirely necessary book

Brilliantly concise, accessible and sensible. Well-structured, coherently argued, this book is a tiny glimpse not only into the shadowy world of the ultra-rich, but also into the potential alternative future which is waiting when we finally realise that they are pulling all the levers of power. Should be required reading before entering a voting booth!

A clear reasoned critique of neoliberalism

Any time I had a quibble it had been addressed within a couple of pages. Clearly written and read if occasionally flowery - smokers are not quite as retiring as the author implies (in the uk anyhow). The Madeira case study is haunting and the book leaves hope mingled with anxiety

A must read (listen) for our times

I got through this book in just over a day. I rarely find a book so impossible to put down. But for me, this was the right book at the right time.
I recently came across George Monbiot and I’ve read all his book here back to back.
He’s a beautiful narrator and excellent author. I highly recommend this book and any of his others.

Thorough Clear Crucial

Grateful for this contribution of clarity of where we are now and how we could move to a very different way of being together

Insightful and thought provoking

This is a tour around how a rich elite have secretly and systematically undermined democracy. It finishes with a suggestion of a new direction where we work together towards a better future, but warns that the secretive elite will do everything they can to stop us. Well worth a listen.

Excellent introduction to this topic

George Monbiot joins forces with filmmaker Peter Hutchinson to deliver a compact, accessible summary of how neoliberal ideology has taken over the UK and USA, to the detriment of working class people.

My favourite part is where the authors explore how dark money networks collude with the media, politicians, and think-tanks to shape and sell these toxic ideas.

Narration is great as always when Monbiot reads us his books.
