Summary

Books 1, 2 and 3 in the SKULDUGGERY PLEASANT series – known collectively as THE FACELESS ONES TRILOGY, Derek Landy's fantastically imaginative series about our favourite dead detective.

SKULDUGGERY PLEASANT
Stephanie's uncle, Gordon, is a writer of horror fiction. But when he dies and leaves her his estate, Stephanie learns that while he may have written horror, it certainly wasn't fiction.

PLAYING WITH FIRE
With Serpine dead, the world is safe once more. At least, that’s what Valkyrie and Skulduggery think, until the notorious Baron Vengeous makes a bloody escape from prison, and dead bodies and vampires start showing up all over Ireland.

THE FACELESS ONES
Skulduggery Pleasant and his wonderfully cheeky and inquisitive side kick, Valkyrie, take us through another journey, which promises to be filled with adventure, dark, mysterious meetings, and classically funny moments.

like Lovecraft with comedy and for teens

I always saw these books in shops when I was a kid and never read them. Thought I'd give it a try and was very surprised and glad. Definitely worth a read even as a not-young adult.

A lot of humour and some of the best narration I've heard on Audible.

As a 44 year old man I may not be the target audience for Skulduggery but I really enjoyed these first three books! First one starts borrowing heavily from Harry Dresden (with a smidgen of Artemis Fowl) but very quickly becomes it's own thing.
The humour - mainly in the banter between characters - genuinely had me laughing out loud, and the fantasy/horror elements are pretty graphic for a YA audience.
And the narration: honestly made the whole thing work. Brilliantly characterised and the switch between accents was so smooth I couldn't tell you what the narrators real accent is!
Got this on a whim (3 books for one credit) and have been obsessively recommending to friends ever since. Looking forward to the rest of the lengthy series.

Skulduggery Pleasant

Honestly, I loved the books as a kid and will still re-read them all the time, but i find it hard to get the full image of whats going on when i'm listening, but the narrator is really creative when switching characters. Great for going to sleep to.

Darkly, Entertaining

I got this and a a couple of the follow up collections with some credits. I'd seen the books in the past, my kids had considered them, but not gone for them. Don't be put off by the fact that these are supposed to be books for younger readers.

Quite a lot of action, mayhem and just the right dose of violence. Can have some dark undertones, but just about keeps on the right edge and doesn't go too far.

Robert Degas is a very good narrator and Derek Landy weaves an excellently detailed story, with a pretty large cast of characters.

I'm on to book 4 now and I know I have got a long way to go to catch up, but I'm invested in the characters and look forward to seeing where it goes..

Absolute perfect narration. One of my favourites.

I'm going to break from my traditional review structure for this series, because I've read the books many times, I've listened to the audiobooks several times, and I can honestly say that it is one of my favourite series. I can't in all fairness compare other books against this because I'm too biased in its favour. If Audible had a "6 Star" category, this would be there for me.

If you are in any shape or form a fan of fantasy adventures ("young adult" sci-fi comedy, specifically) then I'm fairly confident you'll enjoy this series. Also, the narration does the book justice. Its one of the best book portrayals I've ever listened to, right up there with David Tennant's narration of the How To Train Your Dragon series. The characters stand out, the dictation has good pace, just... trust me, give it a try! Either you dislike it and refund your credit, or you fall in love.

One word of caution, there are LOTS of books in this series. I mean over a dozen. The smart move is to look for the collections and save a few credits, because following this first trilogy [1,2,3] is the second trilogy [4,5,6] collection, and another [7,8,9] also. After that though I think they are all standalones but I'm not too sure. Alternatively you could help the author/narrator(s) and buy all the individual titles, but lets face it that's quite a few more credits in the long run. Its not my money to spend, so choose wisely...

Wonderful return to childhood memories

read these books as a kid and loved them, falling back into the story was seamless,

the voice acting was great adding the accents and the undertones of different villains brought a different feel to the whole story,
guess the only thing now is to get into book 4-7

Loved it

Such a joy. Funny, entertaining, absorbing, great characters and storylines. It’s great finding a whole new universe of stories I can now immerse myself in. Echoes of Lovecraft and Pratchett. Overall great performance by the narrator (at times the sound levels are a bit all over the place). Hugely enjoyable
