Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Master storyteller and internationally bestselling author Christopher Paolini returns to the World of Eragon in this stunning epic fantasy set a year after the events of the Inheritance Cycle.

The world is no longer safe for the Dragon Rider Murtagh and his dragon, Thorn. An evil king has been toppled, and they are left to face the consequences of the reluctant role they played in his reign of terror.

Now they are hated and alone, exiled to the outskirts of society. Throughout the land, hushed voices whisper of brittle ground and a faint scent of brimstone in the air - and Murtagh senses that something wicked lurks in the shadows of Alagaësia. So begins an epic journey into lands both familiar and untravelled, where Murtagh and Thorn must use every weapon in their arsenal, from brains to brawn, to find and outwit a mysterious witch. A witch who is much more than she seems.

In this gripping novel starring one of the most popular characters from Christopher Paolini's blockbuster Inheritance Cycle, a Dragon Rider must discover what he stands for in a world that has abandoned him. Murtagh is the perfect book to enter the World of Eragon for the first time...or to joyfully return.

Fantastic Continuation

I have loved the World of Eragon since I was young! Reading and rereading these books over and over again over the years. They have all been amazing. This is no different! I was sceptical at first at how Murtagh would be portrayed, but I shouldn't have doudbt Mr Paolini! We were always going to be in safe hands. The world he has built is sublime, and adding a new threat to be faced was brilliant. Absolutely loved this! And having the legend Gerard Doyle back again was nostalgia all the way!

Great characters, average story - if you grew up on Eragon, expect the same writing aimed at children, not adults

Loved the development of Murtagh and Thorn as characters, but the overall story is pretty poor, and sadly, I feel like Paulini’s writing has not improved since he wrote the original Eragon.

Some really interesting things about the wider lore of alagaesia seem to get glossed over, while pages and pages focus on minor, quite boring details, such as his travelling through the caves towards the end.

Perhaps I’m being unfair, I grew up reading the Inheritance Cycle and as a boy, it had everything I could want, when I reread them when I was much older, they were nowhere near as good. I suppose this book is also written for a younger audience which is why I went with 4 stars rather than 3.

Good, but nothing to rave about.

Gripping story

Phenomenal story delving into Murtaghs side of the Eragon books, so tense and captivating. I hope there are more books to come

I wonderful return to the fantasy world we loved

In midst of an era where fantasy novels tend to lack world building its nice to get to return to world that so well established and written.

Plus refreshing to see the world now from Murtaghs and Thorns eyes and see their adventures and traumas be explored further.

Who could've known that this book would be here is not for Stabby the fork.

A good but slow return to alagasia

If you love the inheritance series then I 100 percent recommend buying this. It scratches an itch that I've had ever since I finished inheritance. Doyle gives another brilliant performance and the dragon voice is less out of place In Thorn then it felt with Saphira.

However it seems a shock to the system to go from the massive battles in Brisingr and Inheritance, where the whole land was on the line and the story moved at a brisk pace, to a tale that seems to move even slower then the first book did.
Adding to that I felt some of the chapters were unnecessary and had been added in just to flesh the book out.

Put that aside and there's some fantastic character development for Murtagh and Thorn and some very interesting new characters. Whilst maybe not the thrilling ride your used to in this series you will find yourself hanging on through the slow bits waiting for the reveals.

As usual Paolini raises more new questions then answers to the old ones although I have begun to love this about his books.
