Summary

A balanced account of game changes, conflicts and ambitions. The fall from popular grace of the previously adulated brother of the heir to the British throne as a consequence of his marriage to a beautiful and dynamic Hollywood starlet of colour makes for fascinating listening in best-selling royal author Lady Colin Campbell's balanced account.

Lady Colin knows her royal history and psychology, and as the first seven years of her adult life were spent in the USA, she has a foot in both the American and British camps. With unique breadth of insight she goes behind the scenes, speaking to friends, relations, courtiers, and colleagues on both sides of the Atlantic to reveal the most unexpected royal story since the Abdication.

She highlights the dilemmas involved and the issues that lurk beneath the surface, as to why the couple decided to step down as senior royals. She analyses the implications of the actions of a young and ambitious couple in love with each other and with the empowering lure of fame and fortune.

She leads the listener through the maze of contradictions, revealing how Californian culture has influenced the couple's conduct. She exposes how they tried and failed to change the royal system by adapting it to their own needs and ambitions and, upon failing, how they decided to create a new system altogether.

Review

Well written and well read. The book is a mixture of fact, gossip and opinion but it blends all three very well. In some ways this is a sad book as there was such promise and missed opportunity for the future royal family when Megan joined. The Queen is famed for putting duty before self, something sadly now lacking in these two as they pursue commercial interests and fame. I find it hard to understand why they need financial independence when collectively they already have more money and privilege than most people can imagine. As an aside there is also a fascinating insight into the author and a new found respect for her life journey too. A good book and well worth a listen.

Fascinating and informative

I really enjoyed this well researched and entertaining account by Lady C, which I thought was written objectively and is not entirely negative about MM as some reviewers seem to suggest. Meghan was welcomed by the Royal Family and the nation, especially as she was of mixed race, and received very positive press initially. However, regrettably, she later invited criticism due to her ill-judged actions and unwillingness to embrace what she had signed up for by marrying Harry. I write this on the eve of the "bombshell" interview with Oprah Winfrey which may well prove some of the insights in this book to be correct. I agree with the reviewer who thinks it is sad that such a brilliant opportunity was wasted and hope that Harry will not be estranged from his family and country forever following the Oprah interview. It will be interesting to see what comes of the bullying inquiry.

A horror story.

I like most people do not know where to start when it comes to the Harry Megan story, the person I most feel sorry for is her father, obviously Megan and her friends will say and do anything to make her the poor little thing,IF they stay together which is a big if,I can just picture Harry in years to come just like his great great Uncle, sitting in some office some where, whilst Megan cuts the deals.Maybe we should feel sorry for him....I can't when I think of all the people they are hurting.

I lived listening to this brave and honest representation of what happen. I felt sad for the Queen and Prince Phillip. now I know why.
M and H are fools.

Excellent and well researched.

I rarely write reviews but felt compelled to on this occasion. I found this an excellent book, well researched and at times very amusing. I feel some of the comments on here are not precise. An example of this are the comments about surrogacy. At no time does she say these rumours are true, she simply reports them as part of the rumours on the Internet. This is entirely true as anyone who does a quick search will realise. The fact they may seem
preposterous to some readers is not a sign that the author is being bitchy, in fact it would be hard to write a book about the couple without referring to the fact the excessive secrecy surrounding the birth gave rise to rumours like that and that could have been avoided. In other matters I find the author equally accurate. Having worked in the field of Mental Health for over forty years it is again very true to say that if someone was in deep distress at having experienced racial prejudice as a child that it would be unprecedented for someone not to show any external signs of distress, such as social withdrawal or reduction in academic performance. By pointing out that there is no evidence of this and in fact no witnesses to these occurrences can ever be found it does indeed lead to a conclusion that these incidents may well not have occurred. It is a well known fact for anyone truly knowledgeable in the field of Mental Health that behaviour is much more accurate than an individual’s description of their motivation and feelings as is it much harder to mask than verbalisation. This is a simple fact and I would expect any author who is seeking the truth to point that out. The author also explores the real cultural differences between the US and the UK, especially in terms of values. Again to write this book without pointing these out would be entirely unfair. I found the book balanced and at times very amusing. At times the truth hurts, so if you consider Harry and his wife to be victims of a cruel set of circumstances then don’t read it unless you are prepared to listen carefully to the other side of the story.
