Summary

BAFTA award-winning comedian Graham Norton lends his charming Irish lilt to the narration of his skillfully paced debut novel. With an atmospheric setting and characters that you quickly warm to, it's a vividly written slice of life in Duneen.

Graham Norton's masterful debut is an intelligently crafted story of love, secrets and loss.

The remote Irish village of Duneen has known little drama, and yet its inhabitants are troubled. Sergeant PJ Collins hasn't always been this overweight; mother of two Brid Riordan hasn't always been an alcoholic; and elegant Evelyn Ross hasn't always felt that her life was a total waste.

So when human remains are discovered on an old farm, suspected to be that of Tommy Burke - a former love of both Brid and Evelyn - the village's dark past begins to unravel. As the frustrated PJ struggles to solve a genuine case for the first time in his life, he unearths a community's worth of anger and resentments, secrets and regret.

Darkly comic, touching and at times profoundly sad. Graham Norton employs his acerbic wit to breathe life into a host of loveable characters and explore - with searing honesty - the complexities and contradictions that make us human.

Held

Graham Norton captures small town Ireland with the skill and knowledge of a man who has observed it first hand. The petty twists and turns of everyday life are crafted into a rich tapestry of observation , with comic and dark revelation. I thoroughly enjoyed this Audible book , the voice acting of Graham Norton brought the characters to life . I cannot imagine anyone doing a better job.

Such easy listening

I'm a fan of Graham Norton anyway, but of course this doesn't necessarily mean he'd write a good book. His storytelling skills are brilliant, and I don't know whether it was the story or the narration i enjoyed the most. Listened to in two sessions, and only because I ran out of hours on the first one. Recommend to anyone who enjoys a bit of a mystery and the Idea of village life. Very well written.

More please, Graham!

I just loved this and I can’t wait for Norton’s next one. Such a delight to hear him read it too.

Really lovely

I must say that being a big Graham Norton fan, I bought this simply because I was curious. However I was really pleasantly surprised as not only was the level of narration great as I would expect from him, the story was surprising and so full of emotional insight and tenderness. You can tell that he really understands small town mentality but you can also hear that he really likes and cares about people and understands their complexities. I couldn't turn it off and adored his different Irish accents!

great story told with huge insight on the <br />hero

I loved the characterisation, the in-depth knowledge of the imaginary village in West Cork.

The hero of the piece is a failed policeman who has failed to shine and feels like a failure.

An understanding of the human side

Graham Nortons' success on tv and radio I see now is his understanding of people and life. I have very much enjoyed Holding. I thought it would be one of those easy listens, which it is with a bit more bite though. I will definitely read Graham Nortons' next book.

Very enjoyable story narrated wonderfully by the author

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Graham Norton read his own story. Obviously with the setting in Southern Ireland he makes the ideal choice. His accent and different voices for different characters brings the book to life. The details sometimes reveal the author’s own mischievousness as well as, in other places, colour the story so as to bring it alive.

The story keeps you guessing till the end and even then it probably isn’t quite what you thought. The epilogue was a nice touch too.

A very pleasant listen that once again shows why Audible is such great escapism. And why Graham Norton is a great entertainer whether on TV or writing a novel.
