Summary
'Funny, fascinating, compelling . . . also a wonderful read for fans of Friends' The Times
'HI, MY NAME IS MATTHEW, although you may know me by my full name. My friends call me Matty.'
So begins the riveting story of acclaimed actor Matthew Perry, taking us along on his journey from childhood ambition to fame to addiction and recovery in the aftermath of a life-threatening health scare. Before the frequent hospital visits and stints in rehab, there was five-year-old Matthew, who travelled from Montreal to Los Angeles, shuffling between his separated parents; fourteen-year-old Matthew, who was a nationally ranked tennis star in Canada; twenty-four-year-old Matthew, who nabbed a coveted role as a lead cast member on the talked-about pilot then called Friends Like Us . . . and so much more.
In an extraordinary story that only he could tell - and in the heartfelt, hilarious, and warmly familiar way only he could tell it - Matthew Perry lays bare the fractured family that raised him (and also left him to his own devices), the desire for recognition that drove him to fame, and the void inside him that could not be filled even by his greatest dreams coming true. But he also details the peace he's found in sobriety and how he feels about the ubiquity of Friends, sharing stories about his castmates and other stars he met along the way. Frank, self-aware, and with his trademark humour, Perry vividly depicts his lifelong battle with addiction and what fuelled it despite seemingly having it all.
'An unflinching and often harrowing must-read for 90s pop culture fans' Guardian
'Written with Chandler's trademark sarcasm and self-deprecation' Telegraph
'A hopeful read . . . I started to think of [it] not as a celebrity memoir about addiction, but as an addiction memoir written by a man who understands his own history through the prism of showbiz' Independent

Worth your time
A good and well written story, if a little tone deaf and self reverenchal at times. I leave it with a deep hope that Matty can find lasting happiness in his life.

A Tragedy, Told without the Laughs
Reading this in the days after he died, almost a year since this book was released. A story of the unrelenting, itch just to try to feel better. Matthew describes an unlikeable, unfaithful, selfish unutterable fuck-up who made so many fans of Friends feel better....I really hope people can look beyond the scathing comments left here around November 2022 by people who seem to have been looking for Chandler's 'happy ending' in this book. I hope people can see the unglamorous ravages of addiction. I hope they never feel as bad as Matthew Perry tells us he felt...all the time

Breath takingly honest, sad and funny
This was a heart wrenching but riveting listen. What an extraordinary fight he had with his addictions. It is a tragedy he is no longer with us but we have his words and work forever

Very enjoyable, but ultimately sad
It was a very heartfelt read. He is honest and it's especially sad given what ended up happening to him. But a very good book

An honest account of a complex life.
Whitty, brutally honest and a sweet insight to the life of a well known face we thought we all knew. The reality was that we had little idea of the complexities which belied the much loved character…Chandler.

I hope your resting well now Matty x
I purchased this book before that aweful evening the world lost a very troubled, talented, beautiful gentleman, Matthew Perry or as we all knew him, Chandler Bing! Started listening but had to stop as found it too difficult to hear his voice.... Its a real and painfully truthful book about his lifelong struggles with addiction and lays bare all his insecrurities and lovelife disasters, he had all his adult life! I have thoroughly enjoyed listening and Matty doesn't hold back. Its well worth a read, especially if you have ever loved someone with any addiction! I hope he found his peace!

“Hi, my name is Matthew, although you may know me by another name. My friends call me Matty. And I should be dead.”
So begins the riveting story of acclaimed actor Matthew Perry, taking us along on his journey from childhood ambition to fame, addiction, and recovery.

Matthew Perry's Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing comes to life in its audiobook format, delivering an intimate and deeply personal listening experience. Narrated by Perry himself, this memoir is an unflinchingly honest account of his battles with addiction, fame, and the search for redemption.
One of the standout features of the audiobook is Perry's narration. His unique voice, familiar to many of us as Chandler Bing from Friends.
Perry's delivery is raw and genuine, capturing the humor, pain, and vulnerability that permeate, not only his memoir but, his existence. Hearing his story in his own words and voice makes the experience so much more emotional and impactful.
Perry's wit and humor shine through, providing moments of levity that balance the heavier themes throughout.
The audiobook's structure, while occasionally disjointed, benefits from Perry's storytelling ability. His transitions between different periods of his life, though sometimes abrupt, are smoothed over by his conversational tone and natural pacing. This helped me maintain interest, even when the timeline shifts unexpectedly - which is ultimately why this is not a five star read for me.
The audiobook is a compelling listen, some listeners - like me - may find the non-linear narrative challenging to follow. The jumps between different time periods can be confusing, especially in audio format where visual cues are absent. However, Perry's engaging narration and the emotional resonance of his story largely compensate for this lapse in structure.
Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing is more than just a celebrity memoir; it's a heartfelt exploration of addiction and recovery. Perry's openness about his struggles and his ongoing journey towards healing is both inspiring and relatable. His story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of mental health and the resilience of the human spirit. His tale made all the more heart-wrenchingly powerful knowing that Matthew Perry is no longer with us.
Four stars for a courageous and impactful memoir that resonates long after the final words are spoken.

I wept with laughter and pain
This is a candid account written and read by the talented, troubled and sadly now departed Matthew Perry. The book finished with such hope, that it had me sobbing knowing what followed. Having helped someone previously through addictions, this is a brilliant account, honest (and often brutal) insight into the life of an « addict » Mr Perry I wish so much you were still here, but you glad you knew there was God waiting for you. Could you have been any funnier? … could you have been any more troubled? … could you have been loved any more by so many near and from afar. RIP
