Summary
A lush and twisted dark fairy tale suffused with witchcraft, dark secrets and bitter revenge from the award-winning author of All the Murmuring Bones. Exquisite, haunting and at times brutal, listeners of Naomi Novik and Erin Morgenstern will be entranced.
Asher Todd comes to live with the mysterious Morwood family as a governess to their children. Asher knows little about being a governess but she is skilled in botany and herbcraft, and perhaps more than that. And she has secrets of her own, dark and terrible—and Morwood is a house that eats secrets. With a monstrous revenge in mind, Asher plans to make it choke. However, she becomes fond of her charges, of the people of the Tarn, and she begins to wonder if she will be able to execute her plan—and who will suffer most if she does. But as the ghosts of her past become harder to control, Asher realises she has no choice.
From the award-winning author of All the Murmuring Bones, dark magic, retribution and twisted family secrets combine to weave a bewitching and addictive tale.

Thoroughly enjoyable story!
I enjoyed this as much as ‘All the murmuring bones’ by the same author. And it was pleasing when references were made to places mentioned in the first book, as though set in the same world.
I had to look up what was meant by the word ‘tarn’, and discovered that it refers to a body of water, formed in a cirque.
A nod to the narrator as well, for voicing the characters so brilliantly.

Entertaining story and beautifully read
Clever story with plenty of intrigue - bit of a ‘who dunnit’. Some slow suspense mixed with satisfying quick action scenes. Doesn’t drag. Very enjoyable and the narrator delivers perfectly with excellent accents. Possibly more stories to come? Would definitely listen to another.

Great story - narrator can’t pronounce Welsh
The story was great, and the narrator was good on the whole. The pronunciation of Welsh names (including place names) was so poor it almost felt deliberate. This was very distracting as I ended up yelling the correct names at my phone as I listened as it got so irritating. I’m not sure other languages would have the same poor treatment. Very glad to see the next book in the series has a Welsh narrator. Hopefully they will re-record this one too.

Captivating Story
A beautifully written story and an equally perfect narrator. Enjoyable all the way through. A mix of fantasy and the common family struggles of reality. Not too heavy on the fantasy so it's easy to follow through without having to learn too much of another world. I'm curious to read the other books by the author.

A wonderful dark fairy tale
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as I did A G Slatter’s All the murmuring bones.
There are quite a few writers producing dark, adult fairytales but I love Slatter’s style.
They are beautifully written, gripping tales with wonderful characters and twists and turns. A treat to listen to.
The narrator was faultless too.

Another wonderful tale by Angela Slatter
All The Murmuring Bones is still my absolute favourite and I liked this was set in the same ‘world’. Similar places like Breakwater appeared and a little nod to something that was in The murmuring Bones in this book gave it familiar and comforting feel. Wonderful storytelling (especially the tale of the books title) The only little annoyance I have is that while I enjoyed Louise Williams narration, it irritated me how every character (dialect notwithstanding) pronounced the word town as ‘Tahrn’ By the end of the book it was setting my teeth on edge!
