Summary
A malicious letter
A tragic death
A village filled with suspects
Nothing ever happens in the sleepy village of Lymstock.
Until letters accusing the villagers of unspeakable acts start to appear.
They try to dismiss them as a cruel hoax, but then one of the recipients is found dead. The letter next to her body reads simply, ‘I can’t go on’.
As fear spreads among the villagers, Jane Marple must uncover who is writing these letters – before anyone else is hurt.
Never underestimate Miss Marple
Critic reviews
‘Miss Marple is one of the most subversive, the most original, most distinctive characters in fiction. Often underestimated and overlooked, she always triumphs in the end.’ Kate Mosse
‘Beyond all doubt the puzzle in The Moving Finger is fit for experts.’ The Times

Unusual Christie
I wanted to review this one because it differs somewhat from the usual Christie formula. It's a bit darker and racier - mostly implied rather than fully shown - and in some ways more modern. The requisite murder takes a long time to appear in the story, and Miss Marple takes even longer. In fact, even calling it a Miss Marple novel is a stretch, when her role is more of a glorified cameo. Mostly I enjoyed it, though I could've done without the romance subplots.

A new kind of bliss!
This was such a delicious treat. I read Agatha Christie incessantly growing up and then later kept rereading all of her books for comfort and joy, but listening to Agatha Christie's books read by excellent narrators is a new kind of bliss!
"The Moving Finger" is another fantastic tale featuring the one and only Miss Marple and narrated exquisitely by Richard E. Grant. The narrator takes the already brilliant story to new heights and the characters spring to life.
Like most, I love Agatha Christie's books because they are both cosy and comforting, as well as beautifully written and full of profound wisdom about human nature. This beautiful book is another example of Agatha Christie's genius. Simply flawless.

The narrator was really very talented at the job and is just perfect for Christie novels.

‘Up North’
Has Richard E. Grant ever been to the North of England? The way he thinks we speak is laughable!
The rest of his narration is excellent.

Love love love this one
Even though Miss Marple only has a small part in this book, it’s a great story. But made so much more sublime by the velvety tones of Richard E Grant! Excellent narration and character vocals. I hope He will be reading more Agatha Christie books (or any books!) in the future. His voice is a velvet cushion for the ears.

Excellent story and the best Miss Marple performer
Not only is this one of the great Miss Marple stories, but Richard E. Grant is clearly the best of all the Miss Marple performers, a joy to listen to. It is such a shame he hasn't done more of them, preferably all. An excellent listen and highly recommended.

Armchair detectiving at it's best
Excellent plot, excellently read.
Agatha Christie brilliantly creates the atmosphere of an exaggerated English village of the 40's filled with caricatures who are not too outlandish to be believable. From poison pen letters to budding romance to murder Christie created a plot that is neither too strenuous to listen to nor dull.
Richard E Grant makes for a very pleasant listen. He is one of the UK's forgotten treasures. Grant brings each character to life with well chosen inflections and accents.
Overall, a highly recommended listen.

A classic, brilliantly performed
The Moving Finger is only barely a Miss Marple story, but it is Christie at her best. The peerless Richard E. Grant does a first-class job of narration, with well characterised voices. Recommended.
