Summary

The latest epic volume in the multi-million-copy best-selling Outlander series.

It is June 1778, and the world seems to be turning upside down. The British Army is withdrawing from Philadelphia, with George Washington in pursuit, and for the first time, it looks as if the rebels might actually win. But for Claire Fraser and her family, there are even more tumultuous revolutions that have to be accommodated. Her former husband, Jamie, has returned from the dead, demanding to know why in his absence she married his best friend, Lord John Grey.

Lord John's son, the ninth Earl of Ellesmere, is no less shocked to discover that his real father is actually the newly resurrected Jamie Fraser, and Jamie's nephew Ian Murray discovers that his new-found cousin has an eye for the woman who has just agreed to marry him. And while Claire is terrified that one of her husbands may be about to murder the other, in the 20th century her descendants face even more desperate turns of events. Her daughter Brianna is trying to protect her son from a vicious criminal with murder on his mind, while her husband, Roger, has disappeared into the past....

Satisfied sigh.

If you're reading this review and haven't yet read Outlander then do that first and the other 7 or 8 then come back in about 1500 hours. You won't be disappointed if you love history, are partial to some light SF and a slight whiff of magic and a frolic of sex and romance - more of that - so much more, and are not afraid to face down the dark side of graphic accounts of conflict, and other vastly unpleasant stuff described in fine detail, made so real you can practically taste it, well then come on hurry up, you're home.

Garlic- really!

Enjoyed listening to Davina Porter, apart from her constantly pronouncing Gaelic as garlic! Annoying

Outstanding always

What a pity that continuing, irritating mispronunciation irks me like a burr halfway down your back

Another fascinating web of tales

As in previous books, lots of complex stories within several periods of history. Some very moving stories. As before, I have been troubled by some of the medical history. I cannot envisage a 20th century surgeon having the skills to do abdominal, gynaecological, ENT and orthopaedic surgery even when the dire need of 18th century patients requires such operations. I would have preferred the medical stories to be more realistic

Love listening to the continuing love story and the expanding Fraser family. Don’t want them to end up

DISAPPOINTING

This book was not as good as previous ones in the series in my opiion for the following reasons:
1 - The graphic sex scenes were overdone and gratuitous to the story and development of the characters

2 - The story was disjointed, flipping from the 1700s to the 1980s wthout any link. It was like reading two unrelated books spliced together

3 - the ending was confusing - if Brianna and family had returned to an earlier time than Claire and Jamie, how did they manage to all meet up at the end of the book??

4 - It was a bit like War and Peace - the part relating to the battles were no doubt well researched but they were BORING !!!!!

5 - It felt as if this book was being written for he sake of writing another book in the series, and it fet contrived.

However, the narrative was just as excellent as the other books in the series, and for sheer value for money the length of this audiobook made it a good buy if a somewhat laborious listen!

This book will be listened to by the hordes of people who avidly follow the series, and no doubt if there is a follow-up book in the pipeline I will buy it when it is published, because having come this far I want to stick it out to the end!! Will we follow the grandchildren and great grandchildren of Claire and Jamie? If the books are written I probably will despite the negatives of this particular laboriously written and rather boring one of the series!
