Summary

The compelling new story from number one best seller Jodi Picoult.

Diana O'Toole's life is going perfectly to plan. At 29, she's up for promotion to her dream job as an art specialist at Sotheby's, and she's about to fly to the Galápagos, where she's convinced her surgeon boyfriend, Finn, is going to propose.

But then the virus hits New York City and Finn breaks the news: the hospital needs him, he has to stay. But you should still go, he insists. And reluctantly, she agrees.

Once she's in the Galápagos, the world shuts down around her, leaving Diana stranded - albeit in paradise. Completely isolated, with only intermittent news from the outside world, Diana finds herself examining everything that has brought her to this point and wondering if there's a better way to live.

But not everything is as it seems....

not sure about this one

picoult usually manages to look at moral or ethical issues where there is no clear right or wrong. this one didn't do that but it was an interesting subject...but it wouldn't be near the top of my list to recommend.

Writing by numbers

Overly politically correct; very little depth or quirks to characters, characters were stereotypical; Finn’s regurgitation of the systemic evolution of Covid was just that, regurgitation and page filling. There was lightweight treatment of the mixed bag of themes that were throw together, without depth on insight into any of them in particular. If anything, as a whole, it is metaphor for this performance culture, quick, shallow and covering the essentials. A reader, I’ll never read again.

Good story as expected.

I've read most of Jodi's books. I've not enthused about them all but I enjoyed this one. The missed five stars from me because of a sudden shift which I will not elaborate on because of spoilers. Great narrator.

Fantastic book but not for everyone right now...

As always, fantastic writing by Jodi Picoult and Ireland did a fantastic job of bringing Diana to life. However, given that the subject matter is Covid and we are still living through this, this book might be a lot to take for some and too difficult to read for others. Jodi doesn't pull any punches in her writing and the depictions of the lives of healthcare workers, of surviving Covid and of loss are heartbreaking. I admire Picoult for writing and releasing this novel now, when it's honest and the experience of what we've went through as a global community is still fresh enough that is has not been in any way romanticised but think some may need to hold off on reading this title.

Masterful chronicle of the pandemic

The only downside of this book is that it’s hard to talk about how clever and compelling it is without giving things away! Jodi Picoult always manages to surprise me - not just with her clever plot twists but also with the depth of her research and brave thinking and this book definitely does not disappoint.

A wonderful read

Such a beautifully written story, I had actual goosebumps at the end. Jodi puts such an incredible amount of research into her writing, I got totally lost in the story. Writing about something so difficult that we have all been experiencing is not an easy job, but as usual it feels like it was an effortless task. Another wonderful book written by one of my absolute favourites. Thank you

meh!

I wasn't mad about the story at all. We are so sick heating about covid every day I dont need to hear about it when I'm trying to relax too 🤣 once the story was picking up there was a twist that totally ruined the flow. I wouldn't recommend.
