Summary
Past and present collide on a richly mysterious Nile cruise....
From the best-selling author of Lady of Hay comes this atmospheric and gripping novel.
Recently divorced Anna Fox decides to cheer herself up by retracing a journey her great grandmother Louisa made in the mid-19th century—a Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan. Anna carries with her two of Louisa’s possessions: an ancient Egyptian scent bottle and an illustrated diary of the original cruise that has lain unread for over a hundred years.
As she follows in Louisa’s footsteps, Anna discovers in the diary a wonderful Victorian love story—and the chilling secret of the little glass bottle. Meanwhile two men from the tour party develop an unfriendly rivalry for her attention, while showing a disturbing interest in Louisa’s mementoes. Most frightening of all, Anna finds herself the victim of a spectral presence that grows in strength and threat as the dramatic stories from three different eras intertwine in a terrifying climax.

Excellent in every way!
Loved the story as usual! And love the narrator (which I hardly ever say) everything was perfect.

Evokes Egypt but…
I read this book and enjoyed it so thought I would spend a credit it to listen to it.
I do like the story but the narrator has poor pronunciation of Egyptian names which is really irritating.

Exciting story of an Egyptian artefact
I loved the book. Barbara Erskine is a great story teller of history and ghostly possession. The only reason I didn’t give full stars to the story was the ending.. I was left hanging with so many questions.. I do hope there will be a continuation in another book.
Please don’t leave us wondering what happens now

A very good read (listen)
I don’t believe in the supernatural but thoroughly enjoyed this. It is a gripping story that switches between the past and the present. It has made me want to cruise down the Nile to see what they saw.
My only small criticism is that some (too many) of the pronunciations of very ordinary words are very strange.

Romance in time
I read the book a few years ago whilst on holiday in Cyprus. I couldn’t put it down then and when I saw it was it here on audible I couldn’t get it quick enough. It was as I remembered a fantastic book. As with all Barbara Erskine it takes you away to a different time. You won’t be disappointed you can see and taste Egypt. I loved every minute of this book.

Spoiled by narration.
Found it difficult to get to the end of what was a good story as the style of narration , in my view, just wasn't appropriate.

excellent story spoilt by narrator
Barbara Erskine is a marvellous weaver of tales. This story was ruined by the narrator's inability to pronounce many basic words. Calico is NOT "ca-leeko", rakish is NOT "rakkish".

Narration was overly melodramatic
I think I read this in book form years ago and usually enjoy thus authors books - didn’t remember it - audio murdered it - I got to the end with difficulty.

I don't know where the author gets all her wonderful ideas, but I hope she continues find them. Another masterpiece. Brilliantly narrated.
