Summary

EDINBURGH, 1853.

In a city of science, discovery can be deadly . . .

In a time of unprecedented scientific innovation, the public’s appetite for wonder has seen a resurgence of interest in mesmerism, spiritualism and other unexplained phenomena.

Dr Will Raven is wary of the shadowlands that lie between progress and quackery, but Sarah Fisher can’t afford to be so picky. Frustrated in her medical ambitions, she sees opportunity in a new therapeutic field not already closed off to women.

Raven has enough on his hands as it is. Body parts have been found at Surgeons Hall, and they’re not anatomy specimens. In a city still haunted by the crimes of Burke and Hare, he is tasked with heading off a scandal.

When further human remains are found, Raven is able to identify a prime suspect, and the hunt is on before he kills again. Unfortunately, the individual he seeks happens to be an accomplished actor, a man of a thousand faces and a renowned master of disguise.

With the lines between science and spectacle dangerously blurred, the stage is set for a grand and deadly illusion . . .

Great series of books

Loved the narrator & the stories are very interesting, especially to someone who lives in Edinburgh. Just wish there was another book but will have to eagerly wait.

A thriller based in the 1850s

4th book in the series and the calibre remains superb! The characters are interesting and are slowing evolving. The stories are engaging and exciting . After a 40 year career in the NHS I find the historical element in regard to midwifery and anaesthesia fascinating. Narrator is excellent too. Looking forward to number 5.

Excellent!

Slowish start but builds up to great crescendo! Atmosphere and sense of time impeccable interlaced by historical fact based research.

voices of the dead

This is the second book I have listened to and it was as gripping as the first. Easy to follow with great atmospherics. The relationship between all characters is beautifully balanced.

Murder and mind reading

A great tale of fakery and misdirection. Was feeling very smug about knowing whodunnit-until I didn’t! The characters are great except the dreary wife, who will no doubt do us all a favour and die of dreariness at some point. Quite a lot of genuine pathos in this one though.

Great quick paced yarn

I love this series and this is as good as the others. I like that the books are well researched as far as place and time are concerned. Victorian Edinburgh is atmospheric as always. Some great new ideas of situations for Will and Sarah to get involved in. Always a good balance between serious and light hearted moments. I can never work things out so it was all a surprise to me as the story unfolded. All the characters were well drawn as usual and I’m still hooked by the relationship between the two and wonder at what point the author is going to conclude it! Great, well written entertainment.

Best one yet!

Fantastic story with plenty of twists and turns plus lots of gallows humour. Would suit lawyers and doctors if not dentists, moneylenders, undertakers actors and magicians. Enjoy!
