Summary

A series from the Sunday Times number one best selling author.

England, 1648. A dangerous time for a woman to be different....

Midsummer’s Eve, 1648, and England is in the grip of civil war between renegade King and rebellious Parliament. The struggle reaches every corner of the kingdom, even to the remote Tidelands - the marshy landscape of the south coast.

Alinor, a descendant of wise women, crushed by poverty and superstition, waits in the graveyard under the full moon for a ghost who will declare her free from her abusive husband. Instead she meets James, a young man on the run, and shows him the secret ways across the treacherous marsh, not knowing that she is leading disaster into the heart of her life.

Suspected of possessing dark secrets in superstitious times, Alinor’s ambition and determination mark her out from her neighbours. This is the time of witch-mania, and Alinor, a woman without a husband, skilled with herbs, suddenly enriched, arouses envy in her rivals and fear among the villagers, who are ready to take lethal action into their own hands.

The unmissable listen for summer 2019.

Really enjoyed this book.

My first Phillippa Gregory book. I really enjoyed it. A fascinating trip into the 1600s, history as it was happening and the personal journey of a family living the politics of the age. Thought provoking re women's struggles at present too.

Let down by the narration

I enjoyed the book, as I do most of Ms Gregory's, but I found the narration grating and lacking in characterisation. I expected more of Louise Brearley - a good actress.

Not the best Philippa Gregory

I enjoyed this book but found it a bit slow moving and predictable not as good as other Philippa Gregory books I have read previously

Tedious in part, but builds to wards the end

I’ve read a few books by this author. They were set in the Tudor period and by and large, I enjoyed them. This is set at the time of the Civil War. Charles 1 has been ousted by Cromwell and the country is divided into Royalists and Parliamentarians. The narrative touches on this aspect, but unless you’re familiar with the background, it’s not well explained.

The story is set on the rural east coast and centres on a female with two children who’s been abandoned by her husband and is rumoured to have witchcraft powers. The Witchunts are alluded to, but don’t form the core of the tale. There’s social divide, poverty and an unlikely love match with a priest and Royalist supporter who’s working to help Charles 1 flee the country.

There are many elements but I felt the story was often implausible and it failed to take off as I hoped. Much potential but it only starts to deliver tension and pace in the final chapters. It’s the first in a series. I’m undecided whether to follow the central characters further.

Amazing

As the story unfolded I couldn't wait until I could listen again. I was totally gripped & just couldnt predict the twists & turns. I absolutely loved the way the author portrayed the characters of the time & I felt totally immersed in this wonderful story of love, betrayal & superstition.

OK

Interesting historical background of the everyday lives of people living at that time and of which I have little knowledge. The story is a little slow and there is quite a lot of repetition, particularly in the conversations. I disliked the narration as it was difficult to distinguish between the different characters as they all sounded the same - like a little girl - which was particularly annoying when speaking the male voices. I have already downloaded the second book in the series and am disappointed that it is being read by the same narrator. However, I will have to put up with it as I want to know what happens next.

Story ok narration poor.

The story is engaging enough if you can tolerate the strange monotone staccato of the narration.

Pretty far-fetched story

Having read many of this author’s earlier books, I thought I might like this one, but I don’t. It like historical figures are given modern attitudes and even language. Not for me, this one and glad I didn’t waste a full credit one it.
