Summary

Why is every film or tv programme a sequel or a remake?

Why are people so f***ing hung up about swearing?

Why do the asterisks in that sentence make it okay?

Why do so many people want to stop other people doing things, and how can they be stopped from stopping them?

These and many other questions trouble David Mitchell. Join him on a tour of the absurdities of modern life - from Ryanair to Richard III, Downton Abbey to phone etiquette, UKIP to hot dogs made of cats. Funny, provocative and shot through with refreshing amounts of common sense, Thinking About It Only Makes It Worse celebrates and commiserates on the state of things in our not entirely glorious modern world.

Interesting but rather dated content

The author makes clear from the beginning that this is a compilation of columns from many years ago. Although the content is humourous, some of the context is lost through the passage of time.

A Real Curate's Egg

I'm a David Mitchell fan, I love his outlook on life and his word-smithery but I found this book hard going in parts, just inane rambling. It does have the odd flash of that Mitchell brilliance but I sense that a lot of it was just filling, almost like a schoolboy having to complete a 2000 word essay.

finance and politics not his strong point

big fan of David Mitchell, rather simplistic book on complex issues not his finest moment. like most media commentators he allows himself to be completely inconsistent from article to article and this is made painfully obvious when his views are collected in one place.

Very funny

Whilst I agree with other reviewers that some of the content a little dated, some of it is still prescient but plenty of bits that had me laughing out loud

Great companion in the garden

I love David Mitchell and if you do too you will enjoy this. I don’t agree with everything he opines, but then that would be dull. However, his wit and originality have kept me giggling round the garden as I dead-head and weed and chuckling in the car as I drive. If I can’t be Victoria Coren and be married to him, listening to him reading his musings is the next best thing!

More witty than laugh out loud funny

well written and performed. I felt the book could have done with a bit more structure. it seems too much to be a collection of Mitchell's columns. however it is amusing and had some very good observations.

Giggle

Entertaining. Unique tone. Funny often enough to read the whole book but not funny enough to make me laugh - merely a giggle here and there.

A David Mitchell proper rant (almost)

I am a big fan of David Mitchell, not always agreeing with everything he says but certainly with most of it his sense of humour and irritation matches my own.
