Summary
THE AGE OF DARKNESS APPROACHES. FIVE LIVES STAND IN ITS WAY. WHO WILL STOP IT . . . OR UNLEASH IT?
For generations, the Seven Prophets guided humanity. Using their visions of the future, they ended wars and united nations - until they disappeared, one hundred years ago.
But they left behind one final, secret prophecy, foretelling an Age of Darkness and the birth of a new Prophet who could be the world's salvation . . . or the cause of its destruction. As a dark new power begins to make war on the magically gifted, five souls are set on a collision course that will determine the fate of their world:
A prince exiled from his kingdom
A ruthless killer known as the Pale Hand
A once-faithful leader torn between his duty and his heart
A reckless gambler with the power to find anything or anyone
And a dying girl on the verge of giving up
One of them - or all of them - could break the world. Will they be saviour or destroyer?
'A well-crafted, surprising, and gripping start to a new trilogy' Kirkus

Interesting listen, poor voice actor.
I enjoyed listening some aspects of this audiobook. The author weaves tales of different characters together and while the outcomes are not all together difficult to guess, there is a satisfaction to be had when what you imagined in your head turns out to be what is written. The world she creates is one I can picture and she doesn't dwell with lengthy descriptions of meals for example, preferring to keep the stories moving along through their various plot lines
The downfall of the audiobook is the voice actor. Perhaps I have been spoilt by other audiobooks and therefore I have a high standard when it comes to these things, maybe it's just personal preference, despite either of those things my opinion is the voice actor did not adequately distinguish between characters. He has four voices to play with, a meek girl (ish) a more commanding authority figure (which he caries off fairly well), a weasel sounding villain and a kind of lyrical one he uses for the characters who are being smug or hiding bad intentions. They all seem to blend together and the tone makes the listen a challenge at times with only the story carrying you through.
I listen on long commutes to and from the office and occasionally while I work, honestly I would recommend buying the book and reading it instead of listening in this case, save your ears the irritation and allow your mind to create the characters from what you read.
