Summary

My husband was not a monster. No matter what they say....

The day my husband, Michael, stepped in front of a lorry after being questioned by the police, my world fell apart. He was devoted to me and our six-year-old daughter. But they’d connected him to the disappearance of a young mother from our tiny village.

Now I stand at Michael’s funeral, clutching my little girl’s hand, with tears in my eyes as I insist to all our friends that he died an innocent man. Yet the questions have started, and nothing I say will stop them digging for the truth.

But none of them can read the secrets in my heart, or know about the phone I found hidden in his toolbox....

I’m determined that my daughter will not remember her father as a monster. I will erase any hint of wrongdoing in this house whatever the cost.

Because to keep my daughter safe, the last thing I need is for people to start looking at me....

A completely gripping psychological thriller from the author of the number one best seller The Marriage. If you like Gone Girl, The Girl on The Train and The Wife Between Us then you will love The Widow.

Dull style of writing, ok plot

A little formulaic as it was easy to guess a lot of the plot very early on, but the main problem is that the writing style is so boring. It's almost how a child would write. We have to listen to every mundane thought that goes through Kate's head, and even if something is blatantly obvious it's still over-explained just in case we are too stupid to work it out for ourselves. I am astounded at some of the reviews that claim it's beautifully written - I can't imagine what they have read previously that makes this book receive such praise. The fast forward button was my saviour.

Domestic Thriller

Usual domestic thriller with the woman as the lead character, lots of politics revolving around Mums at the school gates, straying husbands....that kind of thing. And of course being a thriller, there has to be a murder.
So, it's not intellectual, but really well done, plenty of twists but an easy listen. Nothing too complicated. Something to keep the listeners' interest all the way through.

Enjoyable, but a few questions

This is very much an easy listening thriller, as another reviewer has said. There are a lot of threads, deftly woven together, and a neat tying up at the end. Downsides for me were rather too many long passages with people describing their feelings at length, no sense of even mild peril, and some rather unbelievable acts of forgiveness. Beautifully read.

As always, K L Slater delivers

I am a big fan of K L Slater, and this book continues her legacy of interesting plots and easy listening. I enjoyed trying to work out the plot and I was surprised at the end. Highly recommended. Download it soon!

Enjoyable

I do like K L Slater's storylines, but in every book the kids are precocious bratts. Spoilt, demanding and whining. I wish she'd leave them out or at least, try to make them likeable!

Apart from that, I enjoyed this book lol

Trite and predictable

I found this book to be quite boring overall, with stilted unrealistic dialogue and a humdrum story. the best thing about it was the narrator who did the best she could with the source material

Over explaining!

I can’t believe I finished this. The writing was so bad it made me cringe throughout. The author over explains everything and the narration is flat and dull. The characters were also lacking. The storyline was ok enough to make me want to finish but it wasn’t worth it. Very amateur.

competent

The writing is competent but with zero originality. In fact a catalogue of well worn English phrases.
