Summary

This brand-new unabridged audiobook of The Two Towers, the second part of J. R. R. Tolkien’s epic adventure, The Lord of the Rings, is read by the BAFTA award-winning actor, director and author Andy Serkis.

The company of the Ring is torn asunder. Frodo and Sam continue their journey alone down the great River Anduin - alone, that is, save for the mysterious creeping figure that follows wherever they go.

This continues the classic tale begun in The Fellowship of the Ring, which reaches its awesome climax in The Return of the King.

Critic reviews

"Masterpiece? Oh yes, I’ve no doubt about that." (Evening Standard)

"The English-speaking world is divided into those who have read The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and those who are going to read them." (Sunday Times)

An extraordinary book. It deals with a stupendous theme. It leads us through a succession of strange and astonishing episodes, some of them magnificent, in a region where everything is invented, forest, moor, river, wilderness, town and the races which inhabit them.’ (The Observer

not only was this a fantastic audio book but it was an awesome experience. For some reason book Gollum sounded uncanny to movie Gollum ;)

Superb

Obviously the story is first class, but Serkis really brings it to life. A wonderful performance of all characters.

Excellent

Andy Serkis’ performance is absolutely brilliant, bringing a new magic to this marvellous tale. I thoroughly enjoyed this and can’t wait to start the third book in the trilogy.

Andy Serkis is a threat to Steven Fry

I am sure you all know enough about these stories to have interest in listening, or not!
Andy Serkis’ reading of these tales is simply perfect! Only Steven Fry could challenge the variety and depth of vocalisations and characterisations here in, and while I delight in Mr Fry’s tonal dealings with Sherlock Holmes and Harry Potter, I suspect Andy Serkis cannot be outclassed in this wonderful

A step up from Fellowship

Book 17/21 for 2021

Unlike the films, where I think Fellowship is my favourite, I found Two Towers the book to be a big improvement on the Fellowship book. For one, it feels like there is almost always momentum in the story unlike the meandering of the latter chapters of Book 1 in Fellowship.

There are still the usual Tolkein flairs, both for good and for ill - long descriptive scenes of geography and history and lore, but very interesting dialogue, or at least - a feeling of each word having meaning and purpose, I always marvel at how Tolkein considers so many facets.

Even some of the dry language is improved, while I still find the geographic talk a bit dull, I found myself more engaged than before on the historical beats. Maybe the longer exposure has gotten me more engaged?

Andy Serkis narration feels like it has taken a few paces forward too, this could be down to the writing but I felt each character more naturally distinguished themselves, it has less of that Children's Book narration from the Hobbit and parts of Fellowship, which was absolutely perfect for the The Hobbit, but I felt wasn't as suited to Fellowship.

Overall, I'd recommend Two Towers, it's turned me around on Tolkein after I felt a bit disappointed in parts of Fellowship, I don't know if 5 Stars is the Tolkein effect working on me, of if it should be closer to 4, either way, I don't regret reading it finally!

Fantastic performance

Why can’t Andy Serkis read all fantasy stories? He made a book I love a billion times better! Compare that to Roy Dotrice doing an awful job of reading ASOIAF, it’s a different level. Well worth it.

Tolkien + Serkis = 👌

Andy Serkis is a fantastic narrator. As well as his (obviously) brilliant character voices, the feeling he puts into his reading is palpable. Beautiful.
