Summary

DCI Nelson has been receiving threatening letters telling him to 'go to the stone circle and rescue the innocent who is buried there'. He is shaken, not only because children are very much on his mind, with Michelle's baby due to be born, but because although the letters are anonymous, they are somehow familiar. They read like the letters that first drew him into the case of The Crossing Places, and to Ruth. But the author of those letters is dead. Or are they?

Meanwhile, Ruth is working on a dig in the Saltmarsh - another henge, known by the archaeologists as the stone circle - trying not to think about the baby. Then bones are found on the site and identified as those of Margaret Lacey, a 12-year-old girl who disappeared 30 years ago.

As the Margaret Lacey case progresses, more and more aspects of it begin to hark back to that first case of The Crossing Places, and to Scarlett Henderson, the girl Nelson couldn't save. The past is reaching out for Ruth and Nelson, and its grip is deadly.

An atmospheric series

I love all these books about Ruth and the wonderful atmosphere evoked in them of the marshland and sea. I enjoy the mysteries and the suspense and excitement and the characters , some great, some flawed and some pure evil. Only good writing can achieve all this for me and in this series, I have found it.

One more please

Loved it .As usual you just want Ruth to have a happy ending with Nelson. But. Hope there is a number twelve as I can’t get enough of this romantic detective and mesmerising atmosphere of the Norfolk I live in and love.

Interesting story

Annoying private lives saga

The never ending back and forth of Ruth and Nelson's relationship is just as tedious as always.

Not disappointed!

When you have read/heard so many stories by the same author in the same series, it would be easy to think that eventually, you’re going to become bored. Not so. This is another enjoyable story which certainly did not disappoint.
I look forward to the next one!!!

Another enveloping listen

I’m so invested in the characters after listening to all of the previous books that the cases almost come second but it’s a thoroughly enveloping story meaning I wanted to listen to the the whole thing in one sitting but made myself take it slower!!!

Has Elly lost the pace?

Given the brilliant pace and passion of book 10 in this series, climaxing with the armed stand-off at DCI Nelsons home, I was doubtful that book 11 would be able to sustain the readers desire to read more & more. However, while not moving as rapidly, this story manages to draw you in straight away. The tale uses the characters complex relationships as it's storyline more than the murderous plot.
This series is brilliantly read yet again and I'm pleased to see that the book is narrated by the same person.
My only chriticism is the use of sound effects used for telephone calls. This makes it difficult for those like me who have a hearing problem. Do we really need this? Save the effects for those who choose Dramatisations & Graphicaudio.
Waiting for the next instalment.

always keeps you guessing

Each Elly Griffiths book keeps you guessing about who did it? The romance with Nelson also gets more involved and I cannot wait for the next book.
