Summary

Jeremiah Burroughs (1599-1646) was an English Congregationalist and a well-known Puritan preacher. With his book The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment Burroughs seeks to promote peace among believers of various persuasions, and contentment in the hearts of individual believers. He defines contentment as an inward, quiet submission of the heart, which takes pleasure in God's providence in every situation.

Pointing out that many people with few possessions are content, and many who have much are discontent, he argues that no amount of money, power, friendships, or sensational experiences can satisfy the heart of the individual. Gratitude can, and it brings healing, whilst murmuring and complaining is the opposite. This inspiring work shows profound psychological insight.
