Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Woman. Athlete. Daughter. Sister. Wife. Mother.

The Race To Be Myself is an intimate exploration of Caster Semenya's many identities, told for the first time by Caster herself.

In her own words, Caster takes the listener through key moments that defined her story, sharing her journey from childhood, through to her teenage years and adulthood.

In the book, Caster will detail what went on behind the scenes when she found international fame, how it felt to have her body dissected for the whole world to see. Caster will explore how the politics of race, gender, and sexuality play out at the highest levels of competitive sports and why she is determined to continue the fight for her and others right to run free.

The Race To Be Myself is an inspirational book about personal freedom and self-love, and how important it is to have the strength and courage to pursue your dream - no matter what it is put in your way.

Challenging

Fascinated by the relatability in this story. On the one hand, i absolutely feel sorry for what you went through. On the other, it’s evident this was such a tricky set of circumstances to deal with, it’s the kind of stuff most people don’t experience in their lifetime. I don’t know if i would have done anything differently. Good read.

Strength and Dignity

Loved this. Well written and an enjoyable read. I loved the strength of Caster. It is shocking and painful the way she has been treated in her sport when all she wanted to do was be herself and compete. I love her dignity when all around her we’re losing their heads.

Fair?

A well written account chronicling the ups and downs of the career of an exceptional athlete, Whilst acknowledging that World Athletics, formerly the IAAF, have a difficult job at times, the treatment by them, and some of its high-ranking officials in particular has been, at the very least, questionable. It's difficult not to warm to a woman who just wanted to run and compete at the highest level. The narrator was very good, except for the frequent over-emphasis of the word but, which became increasingly annoying as the book went on!

Amazing...frustrating....inspiring

There will always be real issues within science to learn from but what Caster has been dealing with has been ignorance, bigots, power hungry people in positions they shouldn't be in and yet, on the other side, people who matter and care and live with integrity and truth. She is an amazing woman with equal parts gentleness and strength...she deserves the best life has to offer
