Summary

Marcelo Bielsa is one of football's greatest eccentrics and greatest enigmas. This is the first English biography of one of football's most contradictory characters. A definitive and comprehensive biography, from growing up in Argentina under a military dictatorship to reviving the stricken power of Leeds United.

Bielsa is described by Pep Guardiola as: 'the greatest football manager in the world'. To the Tottenham manager, Mauricio Pochettino, he is 'my footballing father, the reason I became a player, the reason I became a manager.'

Some Jarring Pronunciations

But that’s often the way in football books. A few errors in reading where what the narrator says is actually the exact opposite of what the original text says. Overall well worth a read. Note that it pretty much finishes at the beginning of Bielsa’s second season at Leeds and doesn’t cover the promotion season or subsequent Prem seasons.

Excellent Insight

Ok so I may be biased being a Leeds fan, but what a fascinating individual Bielsa is. For a manger to get the accolades he does without really being successful is unbelievable. Not only does he improve teams he future proofs them.

A fantastic story about the life of one of football’s most influential individuals. Packed with interesting anecdotes and little known facts.
Andrew Loudon’s reading makes it all the better. Will definitely be listening to this one again.

Moving at times. He's a complex character. You feel like you don't even know him at the end of the book. You perhaps never will. Marching on Together.

What a character!

The epitome of the game. His legend will be appreciated more when Leeds play in the Premier league.
