Gripping and well constructed
Difficult storyline well written and thought through. The characters are excellent, developing well from book one. Narration is spot on and I can’t wait to hear the next in the series.

Diverting enough
Simon Serrailleur is an irritating hero and I fear Susan Hill is in danger of over hyping him but other characters are interesting and her plotting is always strong. Worth a listen.

Riveting
This is the second book I have read about Simon, his work and his family. I am totally involved in this group of people and can't wait to get onto the next one. Well done Susan Hill, you have me hooked

Disfunctional
The main thing I took from this story is how disfunctional and emotionally stunted the main character is. The story in itself is left hanging somewhat and is sad because of the subject matter but overall quite enjoyable.

Disappointing
There are quite a few threads to this story, but none were really resolved and they seemed disconnected. The ending left the reader hanging. I usually enjoy the Serrailer series but this book left me disappointed.

Another Author to add to my list
This is my second Simon Serrailler story and I'm thoroughly enjoying these books.
With each new book you get to know and engage with the characters who are complex, and believable.
Really engrossing stories, and although classed as detective mysteries they also explore social decisions, human nature, morals and the trials of everyday life.
As with life not all stories have a happy ending with all the loose ends tied up.
Great narration by Steven Pacey, on to the next one.

was hoping for a happier ending to this one
loved the first book even though was disappointed everyone was killed off l. But to not give any books Happy endings is starting to put me off. Will try the next book but if ends the same that will be it for me with this author

Gripping but oddly unfulfilling
I think I shall have to get used to Susan Hill not being the usual crime writer. Things get left unsolved, people you expect to live die, and much as I liked this book (and the previous one In the series) I longed for a different ending. Still it was well written, maybe the next one will tie up some ends, maybe not.

Thought provoking and beautifully written
I loved this second book of the series. Simon is developing as the novels move on. A complex and very enjoyable read that is captivating and made me want more. Roll on book 3!
