Summary

London, 1881. Lily Raynor, owner of the World's End Investigation Bureau, is growing increasingly worried. Work is drying up, finances are tight and she cannot find enough for her sole employee, Felix Wilbraham, to do. So when schoolteacher Georgiana Long arrives, with a worrying tale of runaway pupils, it seems like the answer to her prayers. Disguised as the new Assistant Matron, Lily joins the Shardlowes School staff. But there are undercurrents at Shardlowes, and the shadowy, powerful men who fund the school's less fortunate pupils loom larger as Felix's own investigations unfold. Felix can't shake off his fear that Lily is in danger - and soon, his premonitions come frighteningly true....

Perfection

I thought book one was perfect only to find book two even more perfect —if that’s possible. The storytelling evokes the late Victorian age with such depth that I found myself having to pause and just sit in silence for a moment, absorbing the words—-because it was like eating the richest most delicious chocolate cake and having to wait to eat the next bite because the previous bite was still melting on the tongue. I love these characters so much! And the emotions simmering below the surface. The building story, the slow menace and slight discomfiture become more dreadful as the story unfurls. And then the culmination of the complex storyline…. Alys Clare deals with gender issues and social issues using the 19th century backdrop and, as an avid reader of Dickens, I love how she brings the Victorian level of detail and language into our age. It’s so articulate and wonderful. And Lucy Scott brings to life all of the characters with her superb narration. It’s a delight from start to finish and had me on the edge of my seat. And yet there is still a lightness and a charm and sense of humour. It’s not all shadows and fog. Also, all of the locations are beautifully described. Living near those locations, I imagine going to look for them to see if they are still there. These tales are balanced and completely morish, ticking all the boxes. I want more! And will be hearing book 3 next. ( However, I do secretly hope that there will be more romance among characters who seem to quite like each other…)

Just as enjoyable as the first

Very unusual story line, but still very good as per the first book, the narration is superb and the spark between the main character grows more, really looking forward to the next novel
